If these are the only two cars you will consider then take the 1M. the TT's look like hard boiled eggs.

Also consider the cost. I think the TTRS will be more in line with the M3.

1M is classical RWD super car TTRS is tuned AUDI, even not full time quattro. Though it's cool thirsty bitch.

Where?
Track, Straightline, street ?

They have the same HP and torque.
TT's 4WD will launch it faster on straight line and exiting tight corners.

1M should be more nimble on the track.

TT is somewhat lighter as well, some 200 lbs I thought.

TTRS will feel more like a gokart. I have a feeling in the 1M with upright seating position and higher roofline it will still be heavier and less tossable than the TT. On the track it will be comparable in speed, although two different driving style.

Until these 2 have been formerly compared, IMO TT-RS will be the quicker, both from standstill or rolling straight line acceleration, it has the better power/weight ratio and it has AWD...

On a typical track IMO the 1M may be quicker...

Other comparisons other than performance IMO the TT-RS looks better and sounds better (engine note) and has an interior at least 10x nicer than the 1M.

On the flip side it costs more and has less practicality (interior room wise), here in Aust. they are at approx. 140-150k the 1M will be at approx. 110-120k.

M3 for comparison is at approx. 160-170k.

I think the TT-RS is M3 territory. At least price range wise.

The TT is too "pretty." Don't care for it, even if is faster.

Test drove TT-RS recently and it was awesome.

Sounds fantastic, one I drove must have had the sports exhaust upgrade. Sports mode turned the sound up a notch. 135i was very quiet in comparison.

Amazing what that 2.5TFSI engine can do. S-tronic will make it even faster too.

I own a TT RS. After a line of 8 BMWs in a row (the last of which was a 135) I felt a change was as good as a rest. The Audi has surprised me a lot, it is a bloody good car with an engine to absolutely die for, I had an e46 M3 and it rivals and may even top that engine for charisma, notwithstanding throttle response of course. I've mapped mine to 405 bhp (Bluefin) and the performance is epic, sub 10 sec to 100. Fuel economy is a lot better than the 135 too.

The traction is a revelation compared to a rwd BMW, every hp gets to the road in all conditions. Although it's a Haldex system its set up for 50/50 in normal conditions and the shuffling of torque front to rear is indiscernible.

However...

It's no BMW when it comes to a few critical points. The gear change is poor, obviously as it's a cable linkage rather than a lever straight into the box. The build quality isn't up to BMW levels either, it just doesn't feel solid, maybe this is down to the aluminium construction but it squeaks and rattles a bit. The HVAC system is poor too.

But surprisingly, I like the handling and the steering is no worse than the 135.

My name's down for a 1M, so if I'm lucky I've got a big decision to make soon, the RS is just so much more accessible and usable in "real world" situations than my previous fast BMWs have been.

To answer the OP's question though, the TT RS is faster than the 1M, a German magazine, can't remember the name, has timed an S-Tronic at 3.9s to 100 kph. Fast.

I've been waiting for the TT-RS

since it was announced. That was my next car although I feared it would not get to the states until fall 2011.

With the 1M being very close in performance, equal or nicer in my eyes in terms of being visually appealing, and at least $10k less it was a no brainer.

Plus I'll have it for the spring and summer!

Not that I worry about others opinions but so many enthusiests slag the Audi as a "girls car". I don't agree but I won't have to deal with that either. Never heard anyone dis an M car.

As has been stated above Mowse, I think it's fair to say the 1M is no where near as fast as a TT-RS (stock v stock) and it has huge mod potential as well...

Remaps alone get it to over 300kw or 400bhp and it can all be utilised unlike RWD or FWD only...

I've read literature that the new VAG group IL5T has been tested for engine integrity to over 430kw ! and it's future applications will be numerous including the upcoming Quattro coupe with the IL5 at over 300kw stock for that application, the BMW IL6TT is on the way out by comparison.

There's also a 7spd DSG option available now for the TT-RS which as said makes it even quicker...factory qouted figure is 4.3sec 0-100km/h.

1M looks good by comparison simply because of the fact it costs less, otherwise...

There's no question about it, Audi has come a long way in recent years. I used to think that they would never catch BMW but it seems they are catching up very quickly, if not surpassing BMW in almost every way. Dark times we live in gentlemen, dark times...

So is there any definite information on pricing and availability of the TT-RS in the U.S. market? My understanding is that it will become available by the end of 2011 and pricing will be $60-70K. Any limited production numbers BS like the 1M?

Based on my limited understanding of Audi allocations, particularly with the S5, I would guess availability will be extremely limited.

No sunroof on either the 1M or the TT-RS. Does it really affect body rigidity that much when you have a sunroof? Both of these cars are drool-worthy but after having a sunroof in my last 3 cars I feel like I can't live without it. I'd rather have a sunroof than a stereo because when its open and your foot is on the gas thats all the music you need. That and it makes a small car feel bigger inside.

Hope that's not the case for you in the U.S.

Here in Aust. the TT-RS is available to whomever wants/orders one, there's no limited numbers...

1M has initial intake at only 100 vehicles...

In the case of the TT-RS and all other TT's for that matter, the entire centre monocoque construction of the car (69% by body weight) is aluminium, so it may be a case of structural stiffness/integrity compromise if a sunroof hole is plugged into it...same applies for cars like the Evo 10.

Don't know what the go is for the 1M as the 135i and other variants have sunroof option, maybe they just want to keep it stiffer, maybe it's all about saving weight, as most people agree, the 1M is already too heavy...

Schnorbitz, could you elaborate more about your reasons for getting rid of the TT-RS?

I may have to "settle" for a used one over the 1M.

Thanks

Mark

No actual reason Mark, I'm very happy with the RS, as I said above it's been a revelation to me.

It's just the lure of the M Car I'm afraid! If I decide against / can't get a 1M I'll be very happy to keep the RS.

Isn't it just the most amazing sound? It would feel like cheating though, to choose that over the 1M.
