FYI Car will not move in 1\" of snow.

I knew it was bad, not this bad. Forced to take it today due to breaking a RSB mount in the Subaru and being a workaholic.

If you ever wondered, don't anymore, it's worse than you think... Getting stuck in the middle of a mostly flat parking lot is not fun.

No, that's the main problem. I usually just have another car... Should have stayed home today!!

I've known people before who bought car with summer tires and intentionally ran them all year. Only now do I realize how much I underestimated their stupidity!!

Summer tires are WORTHLESS in the snow as I've found out first hand as well!

I drive my M3 in 30 CM of snow and it works without any problem! if it wasn't working in snow, I couldn't use it for almost 7 months in Canada! LOL

I regularly use it here in boston with the snow and it handles surprisingly really well (with the 18" OEM's with winter tires)

I somehow doubt that is accurate.
If there is 30cm of snow on the road that hasn't been ploughed / plowed or driven over by trucks, there is very little chance you have actually driven through it "without any problem".

So you have summer tires on in MA? Are you mad? You do realize that even when its bone dry out in very cold temps summer performance tires are useless to the point of even being dangerous?

Spend less time complaining about the car and more time making sure its properly equipped. You know the X5 4.8is is COMPLETELY useless in the snow with those big wheels and summer tires right? So its not about the car, its about the tires.

When are people going to realize the importance of tires........

Cheers,

Oh no ! Not 30 cm on the road! Usually they plow it overnight from major roads here.

+1. My M3 is in the garage for now - with the cover on....However, I did see another E92 M3 with proper snow tires yesterday. There was enough snow on the top to hide the carbon fiber roof.

I have 19" Dunlop Winter 3Ds and passed a RAV4 that was stuck in the snow the other day.

If it's just snow, you can do it. I've done it in my M5. Ice? Forget about it. You won't move an inch if you don't bring a bunch of sand, deicer, a shovel, and some other gear... Or chains... or Blizzaks. I can tell you from personal experience that spinning the tires won't help either.. it just makes the ice mad :-)

On any car or truck its the tires, its the only thing in contact with the ground I'd take a rear wheel drive sports car with proper winter tires on it over an suv with all weathers in snow. Summer tires are just that, for the summer, below 50 degrees change them or don't drive.

Total BS!!!!!! No Videos never happened!!!!! Summer tires will not give any traction I live in NJ and we have had out fair share of snow. I always had a winter set up. All my cars that had summer tires could not go up my driveway with 1 to 2 inches of snow on a slight incline. To the OP get yourself a set of winter tires you can go through 6 inches of snow or a tad more with no issues. The only issue would be ground clearance. Check out the Videos of a M3 in NJ that was in the blizzard that was posted in this link http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=469475

Put a 4WD truck on summer tires in the snow and you'd likely also be complaining.

Wondering if summer tires would be OK in the snow/ice is like wondering if poking yourself in the eye with scissors would hurt. You pretty much know the answer so it's not worth trying it out.

A couple of years ago I procrastinated installing snow tires. One morning after a one inch snow fall I backed the E46 M3 out of the garage and coasted down the driveway. When I got to the road, I put it into gear and let the clutch out, no gas, the wheels just spun. After much maneuvering and swearing, managed to get it off the road and on to the driveway.

I learned my lesson...NEVER drive in ANY snow without snow tires. The only limiting factor is the snow depth on the road. I've found that four inches is about the limit for the E92 M3.
