Difference in model years

Hi all,

New to the forum but I'm looking to get a used e92 m3. I wanted to know what the major differences were between the model years. I've searched and read some threads that said the 2011 models have cheaper visors . And there were some differences in the iDrive system between the model years. Is there a comprehensive guide on what the differences are and what can or cannot be retrofitted?

Thanks

For the MY2009, they updated the idrive, which in my opinion is far better than the old one. For the 2010, the moved around the seat warmer buttons on the console but everything else pretty much stayed the same. For 2011, they put LED tail lights and offered a competition package option. For 2011.5 they changed up the option packages and added new exterior and two-tone interior colors.

I would get a 2009 for the idrive. The old idrive is terrible.

Go with a 2009 - 2011 models primarily for the hard-drive based navigation and iDrive. The 2008 model's navigation and iDrive are DVD-ROM based and incredibly slow and not slick looking. Also, the 2009-2011 models have extra buttons on the center console area (like back, menu, option) so it's quicker to navigate around iDrive.

I'm not aware of any guides or charts that compare/contrast all the differences. As for retrofitting parts, the 2011 LED tail-lights can be retro-fitted but will require coding to get them to not produce any errors.

At a minimum, get 09 MY. Previous idrive is like using Linux with an oven mitt on your hand. So clumsy.

I think this is a dumb question, but is iDrive standard in the 2011? If not, which packages include it?

Jeez you make it sound so bad. I have no problem with the 2008 iDrive, sure the newer one is much better, but I didn't get this car because of iDrive, otherwise I would have just gotten a 335, I got it because of the way it drives. So yeah, the main difference is the iDrive, I got a 2008 a few weeks ago and absolutely love the car and the iDrive on it works great for me. I don't use Nav much anyway, since I generally know where I'm going, just a nice to have feature. A hard drive to store music would be nice, but I have a thumb drive hooked up to the USB port for that right now which works great, so I think I'll be alright.
