Rev Limiter Question

i see all those videos of M3's drifting and bouncing off the rev limiter in 1st gear

can any damage be done to the engine by bouncing off the rev limiter for like 5 seconds or any period of time?

jw, no need to flame me

I don't know what vids you've been watching but the M3 doesn't bounce of the limiter...if you let it redline it will just hit fuel cut off and you'll totally bog down...its not e very good feeling hitting fuel cut off..lol done it twice.

It does not. You will hit the fuel cut off and depower. Sucks when you downshift to pass and aren't watching the tach.

The DCT works in the exact same way as any manual. That's my favorite part of the transmission. I hate the idea that a computer can override what I want the car to do. I don't want to car to shift unless I tell it to. I have a manual 545i ('05) and a '07 Lotus Exige, and the DCT acts identically to both transmissions (besides the speed at which it shifts and blips.)

When you hit 8400 it'll cut power and you'll drop down to like 6-7k before power resumes.

I took my 2008 E90 through the some country roads this weekend (with really nice new pavement - which was a nice surprise!).

I did the same thing and hit the fuel cutoff. It made me think about how this car is made for driving at high speeds. Next time I need to pass I'm gonna go from a higher gear.

I was in 4th at about 60 MPH and shifted down to 3rd. Next time I'll leave it in 4th and just GO!!

If you completely break traction, it bounces. It does on mine at least.

Edit: lol this is an old thread...

Yeah - I saw that it was old, but I was actually searching for the info on the rev limiter and I figured this was the polite thing to do rather than starting a brand new thread.

The reason I was searching was because I was hoping I didn't hurt the engine... doesn't seem like I did... and the car seems fine too.

Yeah, good move. People on this forum will pound you with the search emoticon lol. I was just speaking out.

But hitting the rev limiter is fine. The car has safe guards to protect the engine, however, mechanical over revs (the money shift) are not protected. Don't worry about hitting the limiter. Have fun!

I must of hit the limiter a hundred times shifting from 2nd to 3rd and the car runs perfect. (Says my oil analysis)

Good call on mechanical over revs. I'm so overly cautious about downshifting and trying to match RPMs.

My previous car was a Mazda3 with a standard trans, and i knew right where I was in the RPM range just by the sound and speed. I could drop from 5th to 3rd on the highway, match the revs smoothly, and wrestle out whatever ponies that car had to offer up.

Now with all this power up and down the tach I think I'll be able to sprint right out of whatever gear I'm already in!! :-)

Don't care if it's an old thread..
This info can help others in the future if its updated correctly.
It will bounce off the rev limiter,(at least on the 6MT, when spinning tires.)
I do it all the time when I drift, yes in the long run it does minor damage, but it's still damage, I actually created a thread on this because I want to find an aftermarket rev limiter that cuts the spark instead of the fuel like the factory rev limiter does.

Hitting fuel cut is scary. I had no clue what happened the first time I hit it. So what was my answer. Stage 2 tune 8600 rpm. That way you still shift at 8400 n if you barley go over its ok.
