Downpipes

For all those with downpipes or meaningful knowledge about them...

Do you have/suggest/use a ceramic coating or heat wrap? If so, what are the benefits and potential drawbacks of use? If not, same question.

Doesn't that negate the notion that expelling hot exhaust gasses away from the turbos as fast as possible is best? I've heard both sides of this. That's why I'm looking for detailed feedback.

What are the true benefits of coatings/wrap versus none at all?

And, what are the negatives of coatings/wrap versus none at all?

Please do not wrap your exhaust. It traps moisture in and when your exhaust heats up and cools down with the water trapped against it the metal will erode away and it can eventually lead to a hole in your exhaust.

Speaking from experience here... My friend had to buy a new downpipe on his STi for that very reason. The moisture repellent spray does shit so don't think that'll prevent it. It does take a long time to get a hole though.

A good coating won't hurt, but in my opinion it's not necessary unless you're really pushing a lot of boost and your EGT's are too high.

Didnt know that...

Many on here have coated them via Jet Hot and their work is top notch. It keeps egt down and iat's down as well as a over all cooler engine bay. Worth it especially if you plan to track it.

Hi. I think that catless pipes retain less heat anyway because they do not contain a cat which runs at a very hot temp. In my childhood sciences classes we had a box which was filled with boiling water with different sides on it. The matt black side radiated the most heat and the shinny chrome side the least - if my memory is right!

I'd say get catless DP, coat with 2000 coating inside / out, Remove Exhaust manifold and ceramic coat outside of that ( not inside), then wrap

Would the Macht Schnell thermal coated catless dps be good/sufficient for this?

If you're going to coat your downpipe(s), use Swaintech. Their coatings beat Jet-Hot hands down.

I had headers, up- and downpipe coated via Jet-Hot and had to send them back twice to be recoated. The first time, the headers were covered with some oily residue that was an artifact of their coating process while the up- and downpipes were coated so thinly, stainless was peaking through in spots. The second time was due to the fact that they had dented my headers while cleaning off the oily residue during the first return.

I'm sure Jet-Hot's coatings are probably great for most people, but the experience I had with them certainly soured my take on them.

Darnit. I just installed my dp wraped. :/

Well, thinking my car rarely see any water at all, my dp should be ok?

My car still on jack stands so I can take them off and unwrap them.

Please advice.

According to your thing it says your from FL and it's humid down there so I would definitely take the wrap off. It traps the water between the wrap and the downpipe and as you heat up the exhaust and cool it down repeatedly it just erodes away at the pipe. If your car sits in a garage with humidity control then I may say otherwise, but I still don't think it's a good idea. Heat shields, coating and turbo blankets are where it's at. My friend here in NY had a hole in his downpipe after 25,000 miles and was like

and then it was determined the wrap was the culprit. His car spends a lot of time outside though.

Could you elaborate on why Saintech coatings beat Jet-Hot "hands down"? Was it just because of the better experience?

Not knocking you, just curious if there was a technical reason.

well if they fail to even properly coat the thing what makes you think they designed anything worth having?

Usually such obvious failures are consistent through out the company.
