Why isn't active cruise control offered on the M3?

This is a simple question that's been bothering me. Anyone know the answer?

I'd love to know the answer as well. I would take a guess and say because it is a performance car, maybe the speed?

active cruise control is where the car has a sensor in the front that senses how far the car in front of it is, and adjusts the cruise control accordingly

cruise control by itself is what you have in your car which you are able to adjust your speed

I had it in my A5, and liked it a lot.

Maybe it was cost prohibitive, or there was no place to mount the sensor. The sensor on my A5 was about the size of a fog light, and BMW has said no fog lights for the M3 because they would interfere with engine cooling.

That's just a wild ass guess on my part.

I think the European M3s have it - I expect the problem might be the active lawyers over here.

It hasn't filtered down from 5/7 series options list to the E9x yet (and it never will for this generation). Expect to see it + a multitude of new options on the F3x series.

I remember my sales rep walking me through the features of my first M3. He gets to the cruise control and says "its an M3, you don't use this."

I was not aware of this. I stand corrected.

My thought is that BMW has thrown a few too many gadgets on the M3 as is, and that active cruise control wont be missed by the masses. Yep, we've just placed an order for a fully loaded (ok, w/o a moonroof) E90 M3, but active cruise control IMO is just something that a typical M driver doesn't need.

If I were a single guy, I'd have ordered a car w/ fewer options like Competition Package and DCT.....

Ciao,

I thought I read somewhere that they purposely didn't make it an option because an M car is a driver's car. But I won't be able to find the link. I'd love it in my 2013 M5. You can see what I think of Active Cruise in my sig.

+1 can't believe this is the first post in the thread to say this.

You know the M stands for MOTORSPORT. Why would you even want active cruise control???

I suspect the demand is too low to justify it. I could be wrong but I think it would require more than just installing the sensors and other hardware from the 3 series. Due to the different body panels it would probably need some reengineering to be compatible with the M3.

Is this option available on other M-cars? It's not listed as an option for the M6 and, of course, there is no M5 currently in production. I know the X6M has 'Dynamic Cruise Control' but is it the same as 'Active Cruise Control'? Does it perform the same function (maintaining distance)?

At the end of the day, I'm betting BMW weighs the likelihood an option will be used vs. cost and weight, then decides whether or not to make it available in M-cars. I'd love to have this feature -- if anything, just to play around with it on the highway. I'd also LOVE to have a HUD.

Maybe because it is a LUXURY sports car. Just because it is an M car does not mean we are all Mario Andretti and take a race track to work everyday. Active cruise control is great for long distance driving.

Some folks let this M thing go too far in their head, as if some of us are lesser people because we want some nice features in a expensive car. I would understand that kind of thinking with a Porsche GT3 RS, or a Ferrari Challenger Stradale, but not the standard M3...that is what the M3 GTS is for.
