Hello everyone, just making a thread about my new 2011.5 BMW M3, now that it's finally arrived!

Before I go on, I have to say this: Best Christmas Eve ever.

Ryan shot me an e-mail in the opening hours of yesterday, and I scrambled to make it before their early closing hours that day. Now, I'm not a very eloquent person, but I will say that it was the most hassle-free and easy pick-up that I've ever experienced, so I have to thank Ryan and Steve Thomas BMW For that! I will write up a review in the relevant section later on regarding my excellent experience.

I would like to immediately point out that compared to my 2008 M3 (which had 3 engine-defect failures, one factory-defective transmission-related failure, and one power-steering failure), this car drives drastically different. Infinitely smoother motor and transmission than before. I would like to point out that the ride is noticeably rougher than stock, though not rougher than when I had KW V3's on. I can't tell if this is a product of the Competition Package springs and shocks, or the Pirelli tires, both of which are stiffer and tougher than what my 2008 came with. I have to say though, that I am quite pleased with the package. Overall, I am extremely pleased with the new 2011.5 over the 2008, although there are some pros and cons to consider.

Personal Pros:
  • Working engine/transmission.
  • Much better interior overall (Extended palladium silver looks terrific on LeMans Blue).
  • Much improved iDrive system (iDrive 2).
  • Competition Package (It's not the be-all end-all, but IMO better with than without).
  • ComBox upgrades (Bluetooth streaming and stuff is really nifty and convenient).
  • SatNav (I know this is part of a prior category, but I would really like to emphasize the vast improvement of the 2011.5 system over the 2008 one).
  • Factory Alarm (I know it's stupid, but it beeps! My 2008 never beeped ).

Personal Cons:
  • Terrible cost-cutting sun-visors (the quality is unbelievably cheap! Straight out of a 1990's Civic).
  • Auto Start-Stop (not ideally executed and potentially hazardous, keep this feature off).
  • Slightly rougher ride (this doesn't bother me, but my passengers made note of it today).

S'about it. I'd like to say special thanks to my family and noona for making things possible, Jimmy and Ryan at Steve Thomas BMW for getting my foot in the door of the new M3, Joseph (JosephBryan) for getting me there before 4:00 P.M. Christmas closing time, and the forum for 2-3 memorable years. Looking forward to the future with all of our members once more.

Here's the only pic I could get, courtesy of Jason.

Very interesting!

I assume you have M-DCT, considering your complaints with start-stop?

I understand start-stop is not mated with manual transmission cars. Someone is welcome to correct me.

Wow, sounds like a good Christmas! As for the start/stop, I think it's off in certain M modes. Also I think you're able to turn it off by going through some of the iDrive menus.

I can't say for certain, as I do not have iDrive, but I've read a few posts on it.

Start/stop is off by default at every start. You have to engage everytime you get in. So how is that a con...just don't use it.

Last question about this, does the dealer have to "program" the car, or does the user have to program the car, so the default setting is OFF?

Or does it come that way from the factory, and you can ONLY turn a button to turn it ON.

Because like others have stated this feature is absolutely ridiculous.
