What's up with my paint??
ok, I got my IB e92 in june of 2009. It's garage kept and to date it only has 7700 miles on it. I get it washed at the hand car wash at least 3 times a month and i even dropped it off for a full exterior/interior detailing (3 hour job for like $135) back in september. so, my question is, where did ALL these swirl marks come from? i just noticed my hood in the light last night had pretty bad swirl marks along with the rest of my car. i heard from a detailer that BMW paint jobs suck these days and that this is common? really? also, how much is it going to cost me to get these removed or what not. the detailer told me it could cost anywhere from $450-$8000.. yes $8000, depending on what i wanted.. is it worth getting these removed? i wish i had a pic, i guess i'll post it later, it's just been really bugging me. I plan to keep my car another year then probably trade it or sell it for a newer model M3.
Thanks for your help! |

Take a look in the Wash/Wax forum. There's a step by step there if I'm not mistake on how to fix this.

You need to know who is working on your car... Make sure your detailer is using the right things and doing the right procedure before you start using their service... Nothing worse than a bs detailer also how do u wash it? Getting rid of swirls will cost nowhere near $8000... If you dont mind the task you can do it yourself... Wash and wax section has all details

The swirls are just scratches in the clear coat of that paint. A good wax job may only last a few weeks depending on weather conditions. Some colors are better then others, Jet Black is the worst. There are some applications out there for a few hundred dollars that can remove them more long term. But if you are only going to keep the car for another year, just get a good wax job, and be careful who you let wash your car.

Did the person that detailed your car did a polish? Sometimes they come with swirlmarks from the factory and the dealer finished up the work before delivery. |

I wonder what the detailer had in his pipe,LOL
Surface scratches usually come form car washes. They use same wash mitts or brushes on every car.Over time they collect dirt and end up lightly scratching the paint. This is why I wash my own car and mitt.Ends up costing less in the long run. The surface scratches can be corrected by washing the whole car with Dawn Ultra,to remove all old wax and polish. Clay bar the whole car if the paint surface does not feel smooth like glass. Polish with a good quality swirl remover.I use Pinnacle polishes. If the swirling is not too bad you can just polish by hand. Wax with a good quality wax and you'll be as good as new. If you don't have the time to DIY, the procedure above should not cost more than $150-200 at a car wash. |

This is the exact same reason I never have let anyone wash my 09 M. To that guy...it is just a job and another car. The swirl marks comes from dirt being embedded in the stuff he uses to wash/dry your baby.
The only real way to remove the swirl marks is to use a three step process…go here http://www.detailersdomain.com/detai...dpackages.aspx and do some research and you can fix it yourself. Good luck....the marks will come out....but it is going to take a little work on your end or some $$$ . |

Going along the same theme here, washing the car yourself is usually the best, although I find that it takes a lot of time to do it properly. Obviously, you have to enjoy it, when it takes that long... hehe.
You might want to read up on this at this link: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9145 A lot of good info there. |

$8000 wtf is he smoking
Not sure how far your willing to go but Id hit up Barry Theal A++++++ work http://presidentialdetails.com/ Also, I have to agree with the others, you need to learn how to properly wash your car. With all that money your dumping into having other people do it you could have had a great arsenal of detailing tools, polishes and waxes. I don't know about you but I love washing my cars and detailing them up

It's the hand car wash... They never clean your car well, so when they dry they just end up wiping dirt all over your paint. And black just makes it x100.
You can polish them out, but my experience is black = swirls.

The problem is caused by whoever is washing your car. You should either seek another detailer or learn to properly wash your car yourself. For about $1000 give or take, a detailer should be able to properly correct the paint on your car. I think it is definitely worth it to have them removed. Once the paint is corrected, maybe you can talk to the detailer that does the work for you about some kind of scheduled/periodic maintenance program for your paint or maybe he can teach you to properly wash the car yourself. If the paint is corrected and properly maintained afterwards you can prevent most of the swirls from re-occuring for a long time.

Just because it is handwashed doesnt really mean much. I remember when I started to manage a detail shop back in college that "hand washed" . Well, first thing I noticed was the TERRIBLE technique. They would wash NUMEROUS cars with the same bucket of soap and not have a rinse bucket. Then when they would wash the mits off they would throw them on the concrete and spray them down, when there was dirt and rocks all over the floor from previous cars. This probably put more scratches in than the scratch o matic. And for a place to even suggest 8k...please!!! I would suggest looking into another place to wash your cars.

I've seen Street Dreams Detailing and Detailers Domain's work. Well worth the money spent. Best two in Bergen County NJ.

I guarantee if that dealer really did charge 8k, they still wouldn't be able to touch what REAL detailers could do on your paint.
Go over to autopia.org and find a detailer in your area. Trust me. |
