Bmw X5 Diesel Noise Quality
i just saw a video of a brand new x5 diesel with no more than 10miles and to me it sounded very loud and annoying. almost like a tractor trailer. is this what every1 refers to as "the break in period" or is this common in all diesels.

"Very loud and annoying"? Nope. In fact, our 35d is quieter when moving than our old 3.0i, probably because the diesel turns fewer RPM for a given speed than the 3.0i did. And it gets about 19.5 mpg in pure street driving, 27 on the highway at a steady 75 mph. John C. Edit - just heard the video, and all I can say is that is nothing like what it sounds like in person. It almost sounds like the video was overdubbed with audio from an 18-wheeler, or the recording volume was just too loud. Go to a dealer; listen for yourself. |

Try this one
I think the mic of the camera over amplified the noise. As stated over and over, the new diesels from BMW, VW, MB are quieter, cleaner, and more powerful than ever before.

Simple. If it bugs you, don't eff'ing buy one.... Especially if your only basis is a crappy video posted on YouTube. I mean, seriously?
It IS a diesel, so it won't sound like a gas engine. Don't expect it to either. It will sound like an 18 wheeler sometimes, so what? [/retarded thread]

Noise not bad
Hi: I bought a 2009 and loved it. Just traded it in and got a new 2011. It has lots of new fun stuff.
Friends who thought a diesel would be loud are amazed when they take a ride. It isn't much worse than their own gas-powered cars. I think the advantages of the diesel far outweigh any 'perceived' disadvantages. I say 'perceived' because most folks think these diesels are like the diesels that used to make a terrible clatter, belch black smoke, and stink of diesel fuel. These new diesels don't do any of those things. Go try one out - don't base the purchase of a 60K+ vehicle on a YouTube video. The videomaker may have an axe to grind or may have used crappy equipment. I think these are great vehicles. I plan on buying the sedan as well. Cheers, Mike |

I test drove the 35d and 35i back to back - the 35d was too loud for me on idle and off-the-line acceleration so I chose the i, also the 6spd auto in the D vs. the 8 spd auto in the i made the i a much easier choice.
It's a personal preference, not "knocking" the d (no pun intended), just drive both of them back to back and see which you prefer.
