Z06 or M3 ??
Hello people,
What better people to ask than the american M3 community : I currently own a E92 335i and cant decide between a black 2007 Z06 or white 2007 E92 M3 I am a real BMW addict so will I regret buying a Z06 ??..... yes I know the interior of the Vette is not in the same league as the M3 but man that Z06 looks sooooooooooo hot Vette on 20 inch OZ superlegera's

One of them is a brute that will fall apart, the other is a finely tuned driving machine with a high revving V8 that sounds like no other...

I am in the same exact boat (I have the GT-R in the mix as well). I do not need a car with back seats either. After much debate within myself, I am about 95% sure I will go with the M3. There is no denying the power/performance of the Z06 (I had an '07 back in 2007 and the car is insanely fast) and the exterior styling of the car is absolutely beautiful. The car is a bit noisey (transmission and drivetrain) as there is not much sound deadening and it is a raw high performance car. The car is pretty damn comfortable though (more comfortable as a DD than my former Porsche 997S). The big bogey for me is the build quality...meaning interior finish and quality of the bits (very plasticy...it even smells like plastic). The 3LZ interior does improve the dashboard and door panels a bit but it is still a far cry from an M3. After driving countless BMW's and three Porsches, I just don't think I would be totally satisfied with the build quality of the Z06. I will agree with Stingray in that the chances of the M being back to the dealer for an issue are probably more likely than Z06 being back at the Chevy dealership. Drive them both for as long as you can.....either choice is a good one IMO.

I had C5 and C6 ZO6's, as well as a current E92 M3. I was a fairly serious track rat when I had the Vettes, and they were both great cars. The C6 engine failed with only 6K miles, but was replaced in Bowling Green under warranty. The M3 is a great sports sedan that does everything it should, in a very useful package. The ZO6 is very fast, handles great, easy to maintain, and will get 30 mpg on the highway. The M3 quality of build and materials is better, and it is an easier car to drive on a daily basis. The ZO6 will simply blow it away on track, and with its hp and torque, it demands attention to driving technique and is a great teaching tool. The M3 is the most forgiving car near the limit that I have ever driven. Any experienced driver can be fast with it almost immediately, just have good tires and turn off DSC. Very different cars, depends on what you want.

Geez.
Both are great cars, just different kettles of fish. If I had a garage large enough, and the $$$, I'd have a Z06 and an M3. Oh, and one of those new BOSS Mustangs as well, and probably a Cayman S. It's just about what you want/need out of the car for crying out loud. There's no one "best" car. OP, what are your objectives/goals for the car and what duties do you need it to perform? |

My dad as an 08 special edition ZO6...while it is a fantastic car, they can't even be compared. I have never personally driven the zO6, because I will never be allowed to...but it all depends on what you want...American Muscle, or German Precision. I was faced with the same when deciding between a Shelby GT500 or an M3, and would have hated myself if I had chosen the GT.
The only thing you are getting with the ZO6 is power...interior is very low quality for that type of car and the lack of technology is ridiculous for the year of the car. No Ipod adapter standard, and the nav system is the worst thing I have ever seen BMW has POWER and beautiful interior with AMAZING technology...I love learning all the new things it can do. So IMO BMW>Vette

Forget about which car to get...GM probably won't be here in 5~10 years....
Now...it's a different story if you're comparing say...Mustang Boss 302 vs. M3....at least Ford is a healthy car company that didn't us need us tax payers to bail them out. |

Can't argue about the Z06 winning the performance catagory.
My issue was less about the vette's lessor interior but more the size of the car. Dont get me wrong it's bigger with a purpose but I like the smaller size M3. Anyone else consider vehicle size when choosing. |

Thanks for all the reply's peolple....... reeding through them gives me a lot more info.
I have read a few times that a Z06 engine has failed and has to be completely replaced...... Z06 I'm looking at is a 2007 with 34000 KM..... will this engine still fail or is it past that point and will it run a lifetime ???? Car has a new Pioneer nav system so will function a lot better. Thanks for all the info Gr, Mark

Smaller size M3? Better get out your tape measure and scales. The Vette looks bigger than it is due to its different proportions. Compared to the M3, the ZO6 is 600 pounds lighter, 6 inches shorter, 7 inches lower, and the track is only 3 inches wider.

Thanks for all the info people,
Rocker arms on some Z06 engines have problems after which the engine is destroyed... warrenty is an issue in europe because GM has no more dealerships..... this is holding me back on the Z06, never read about the M3 having major engine problems. Gr, Mark

I'm picking up a 2008 M3 in a month, finishing up the lease on the 328i.
If I didn't need 4 seats, I'd rather have the C6 Z06. If I didn't need 4 seats, I'd probably still have a Vette (had 5 so far). Many people assume bad things about Vettes, but having the track experience in mine, I'd say most opinions are simply regurgitating notions that are about 30 years old. Not sure why that is, but the typical stereotypes still seem to attach themselves to the Vette. No comparing the Vette's V-8 to the M3 and the Vette weighs about 600 pounds less. Huge hatch area, great cruising MPG, but of course, just 2 seats. Ultimately, it comes down to what you want / need to do with the car.
