Question on TPMS, switching out tires/rims

I am getting rid of my stock 18" wheels on my 03 Z4 3.0, and will be putting on aftermarket rims and tires.

Do I need to unmount the tires from my stock wheels and pull out a TPMS unit to put into the new rims?

Thanks GP20. So I should be fine with just switching out the rims and tires, correct?

Actually our cars use a Flat tire monitor. It uses part of the abs to sense a flat tire and wont make an alert about low tire pressure. Our valve stems are just the generic rubber ones. Then again I could be wrong but this is how BMW explained it too me

edit : Im not sure which year this was up too but i believe they changed over to TPM's in 2006 or 07.

TMS/TPMS System pre 2007ish monitors wheel rotation off the ABS sensors - I believe it's +/- 5% on any one wheel triggers low pressure...

While we're on the topic of TPMS, what would happen if I replaced all of the tpms equipped wheels with non tpms equipped on my07 M coupe? Besides the TPMS light coming on, are there other effects? (eg: abs or tcs not working)

Apology if this has been covered.

No - just dash warnings - best to add back the sending units on the new wheels....IMO

So, how about another question...

So what do the owners of two sets of wheels do? Same TPMS in all eight or does it have to be programmed to each set of four? If all are stored in the garage, will the car read the air preasure in the four that are not on the car also?

Steve

^^ I have another set of 4 wheels with TPMS in the garage close to the car (with tpms wheels). . .No lights thrown. Of course, all 8 of the tires are full of air.

Watch the classifieds sections of the various BMW forums. I got a nearly-new set for $100 shipped.

Garage List
From SIB 36 05 05:

The yellow tell-tale must illuminate during the NHTSA required test within 20 minutes when there is a 25% loss in tire pressure (any or all of four tires).

FWIW, I also have two sets of wheels with sensors in all wheels, and I swap them back and forth with no problems what so ever.

OneBlue,

Did you have the TPMS sensors in the 2nd set of tires calibrated by the dealer or did your computer accept the the new tires without calibration?

I did nothing beyond have them installed when I had my tires mounted up on the new rims. I installed the TMPS sensors on the wheels and then took them to a shop to get tires put on. To be honest, now that I think about it, I didn't even check that the new ones had the same pressures and the original ones and it didn't set anything off. Which ever set is not on the car is sitting right next to it when it is parked (because I don't have any other place for them currently), don't know if that is affecting the situation or not. Basically, when I start the car, or back it in after driving it, the car is next to 8 TMPS sensors at one time, the ones on the car and the wheels sitting right beside the car.....

Does anyone know if this effects the 2006? I believe that I once read on this forum that the 2006 Z4M computer will not set off the low pressure light light if sensors are not used. Can anyone ellaborate? Thanks...

Not an issue really. I have them on my OEM 18s and not on my Volks. Just dash light so I dont worry about it.

We don't have TPMS sensors in the wheels...
