Proper breakin during european delivery?
How do you address proper brake in when doing ED?
I hear everyone talking about being out on the autobahn with there brand new cars that have not been broke in per the book?

You drive your car normally. Just because you're on the autobahn, doesn't mean you have to drive it to 155. Keep it under 100.
I waited to do 145 until I had 850 or so on the odometer. |

Most people do not know this... but German law is that even when you see the "unrestricted sign" (white sign with three black diagonal stripes = end of restrictions, ie drive what you please), they still say it is "recomended" that you drive 130 kph. But you don't have to! :")
The do say that any accident that you get into over 130 kph is on YOU though. Meaning your insurance will not pay. But you have to be doing something really stupid for that to happen. The only people driving around 130 kph are the "non drivers" who drive Japanese-like/imported cheap-o cars or the micro fuel efficent cars. It is THESE very same people one must watch when coming up from behind... bc they tend to pull out and pass anther like three cylinder car doing 129 kph when they are driving 130 kph! Most Germans drive 130 to 160 kph. Fast traffic drives around 200 kph or more. It won't be hard for you to rack up 1,200 miles doing ED. Just take it easy until then. And after 1.200 miles - gradually start to open up the taps. Btw... gas cost $7 a gallon over here... so that is another reason to drive slow-er. |

120mph is under 4,500rpm but I only held it for a few minutes while in an unrestricted stretch of autobahn.
From there the wife and I spent 4 days driving in the Alps. The mountain roads are ideal for breaking in a new car - lots of 1st gear switchbacks, RPM's vary a lot as you're ascending and descending and not a lot of high-speed driving. The views are spectacular and the roads narrow. Your ass will pucker more than once with oncoming traffic. The roads seem to get narrower in Italy and the drivers crazier! Just head for the squiggly lines on a map and you'll find a driver's heaven. Best experience I've ever had while traveling. BMW really put this ED program together well. Can't wait to do it again!

1200 miles could be a lot, depending on how long you're there. We spent a week with our 135 and racked up about 750 miles. Take some time to enjoy the countries you'll be in, knowing you'll have plenty of time to flog the beast when you get it back. Having said that, we enjoyed some really fun roads and a couple of runs at about 220 kph / 135 mph but kept it under 4500 rpm. Just drive the car with a little bit of sanity and you'll have a great experience.

I think a lot of people who do ED ignore the breakin recommendations just like they would if they took delivery in the U. S..

For US sales, leasing is about 60% of BMW's volume (as I understand it). Transpose that to ED and you get your explanation. As for the remaining unknown percentage of owners who ignore the break-in period on ED, perhaps they turn over their car before the 4 years run. Or otherwise, just they are not worried about it.

i try to keep it slow, vary the rpms til around 500, more so for the brakes and tires to break in. then go for the high score!

Just be sure to stop and take a picture here. It's mandatory for all 1 Addicts doing ED.

At the ED delivery I received a strong warning about heat cycling the tires a few times before I exceeded 120 kph. That was no problem because we were on the Autobahn just about every day. The tires really felt slippery until I put about 300 miles on them. By day 4 it felt comfortable enough for a short run at 220 kph (135 MPH).

At first glance, I thought M_Thompson had reprinted Ptack's photo at Neuschwanstein, but of course, they are 2 different cars!
You are right Ptack, this is a mandatory stop. BMW should reserve a parking spot right there for the photo ops. |
