DCT juddering between 35-50mph. What's up?

My 2008 E92 DCT with 50k miles has developed a strange juddering at between 35mph and 50mph. Any other speeds are fine

I notice it most when accelerating hard. It feels like the propshaft is shaking. Once I get over 50mph it disappears.

When cruising at 40mph it feels like the road is covered in pebbles.

It doesn't matter which gear its in, so it must be driveline or gearbox related, not the engine.

My dealer is puzzled so it would be good to go to them with some knowledge of what's going on.

Anyone else experienced this?

It sounds like quite a severe problem. something like this will be figured out quite quickly with your BMW Tech so dont worry about it.

just take it in, and pray to god that they cover you for whatever it is (your warranty is up at this point, correct?). If your warranty is void try your best to have them compensate you for at least a portion of the cost. Your vehicle shouldnt be doing this, but I have read that the DCT gives out (in terms of integrity) after 40k miles.

good luck, I really hope they dont make you pay for a large set of parts.

Yes, it's still under warranty.

The dealers have test driven it and agreed there is a problem, but weren't sure what it was. I agreed to drive it for a while to see if it gets worse.

I'd like to see that too. I highly doubt you read that. There are not many DCTs at 40k miles yet and not too many out of warranty either.

I know they're two completely seperate systems. But I had SMG and drove it almost 70,000 miles and didn't have a problem. Would love to see some literature on this if it exists.

If it's different gears its most likely not the tranny, more likely driveshaft, U-joint, rear differential, or even a tire/wheel. There's a similar post here somewhere that describes a similar problem and it was a wheel/tire issue. Whatever it is, need to take it in and check it out.

I dont have a clue what thread it was.... im sorry to get you guys so heated.... i didnt think through my point when writing my first post.

When i think back on it, it was when i was searching through all the manual vs dct threads because i was trying to choose which to take. Someone was saying some shit about it not being reliable after 40 or 60k miles. So that remark has no concrete behind it, sorry guys

I think what you might have read was the Car & Driver Long Term test. http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/...term_road_test

Quote:
And near the end, the dual-clutch transmission was making clunks and groans. Assistant tech editor K.C. Colwell was adamant that the transmission had loosened up considerably. Twice while the M3 was parked facing downhill, the transmission slipped markedly when the driver was trying to back up. If the clutches need to be replaced, our local dealer quoted us $3296 for the job! So far, none of the M3 forums has reported any issues with M DCT, save for the service bulletin already mentioned. Indeed, most owners seem besotted with the dual-clutch gearbox.

thank you. I was really starting to get worried there for a minute. I knew i wasnt talking bullshit, i swore you guys had me thinking if i invented that fact to myself to try and convince myself not to get the DCT (i was favoring the MT). Thanks for reassuring my sanity

Yeah, the C&D long term car was discussed in the past, and its an interesting data point. But it is just that - one story. And frankly I am not convinced that the issues they were having were real problems. Of course the transmission clunks and groans from time to time, and of course its going to loosen up. I don't remember how many miles the car had on it, but lots of us here are over 30k and have had no clutch slipping or other problems.

But the main problem I have with their conclusion is this though:

"If the clutches need to be replaced, our local dealer quoted us $3296 for the job!"

The thing with that is, the DCT is not serviceable. BMW's official stance is, if it fails, you will have to replace the whole transmission. And in fact, last I knew, replacement parts are not even available, at least not officially. Now, of course, that doesn't mean a private shop can't crack the thing open and attempt a fix (I sure as hell would at least give a try if mine failed out of warrantly), but this was a BMW dealership, if I am reading him right. Plus, I can't see how $3k could possibly cover the fix, even if a clutch-pack replacement is ultimately feasible. I would figure double that at least. So, I have to question the credibility of the author of this article on this particular area of expertise. He should have immediately called BS on whoever gave him the quote. Or maybe he just made it up, I don't know. Not accusing him, just saying the whole thing is shaky.
