Broken Rear Springs?

So, there's this 03 Z4 up in Kentucky I'm checking out. I've been talking back and forth with the guy over the last couple weeks. I live about five hours south. So I'm very pleased that he's been so honest with me.

STILL! ...Today he tells me today that he put new rear break rotors on this past weekend and noticed that the rear (suspension) springs were... BROKEN! "WTF!!!", I'm thinking.

He says that this is common with these cars and also 3 series for that mater. REALLY??? Is this true? Broken springs are common on Z4s? or is this just a northern thing?

It happens.
It's usually at the very end of the coil, many people don't realize it until they're doing other service on the car.
I'm not sure how common it is though.
IMO not a big deal.

Sounds like a straight up guy, he didn't have to disclose that info.

Its a common thing for areas with lots of salt and sand on the roads. The sand wears down the anti-corosive paint, and then the salt rusts the metal.

Fortunately, the springs are a 2 out 10 for replacement effort. There's literally only one bolt to remove before the springs.

The rear springs are relatively cheap to replace as well. Part 33507836827

It's very common with the Z4s across the pond in the UK, not as common here, but it still happens.

Happened to me over this past winter. Mine is a daily driver, even through the salt and snow, and I'm sure that contributed.

Yeah I agree about the guy.

It's also not a difficult fix at all.
