1M...a replacement for Z4MC?
It is year four with my Z4MC and as much as I still love it, I think the 1M will make a more than adequate replacement next year...

I've been following it and if the 1 crowd considers the "M" version a let-down, then I don't see how it could be compared as an adequate replacement to the Z4MC.

I sort of want a new car and not have to deal with the post-warranty issues that may arise. I thought about a M3 sedan/coupe but I don't crave it as much as I did my old E46 M3 coupe. The 335is is interesting...

Well, I can't say don't get a new car, that's more like personal preference. But for the warranty issues, you can always purchase extended warranty and/or maintanance plans.

I swap out cars every year so I can give an honest opinion here. That car will undoubtably get the 335is version of the N54. Not sure about the suspension but I doubt it will be on par with our cars and I doubt it will have a LSD. Unless they do some more of weight loss program on it or give it fabulous wheels, I'd recommend just get a regular 135 and mod it out. Mind you I hate the looks of the 1-series, just seems like a 3-series that was front and rear-ended at the same time

if its an M, they are not going to half ass it. That being said, I am still waiting to hear about anything that makes it a candidate for replacing the z4m

I'd stay a good distance away from anything with a HPFP (High Pressure Fuel Pump). That means anything BMW turbo charges with Direct Injection.
The HPFP has been a major failure point on the N54, so bad and so widespread BMW increased the warranty to 100K miles. Lots of folks have gone through several or more, lemoned where they could, and had cars simply flat out fail leaving them stranded. Direct injection itself has issues: major carbon build up. Cars lose power over time, knock, and need to be cleaned out. This issue isn't recognized officially by BMW, but it appears to be a problem with any car (Porsche, whatever) using DI. Lastly, I'd stay clear of any new tech on a first year car. Early adopters are always going to pay a price (ask me about my DCT on my M3--should have listened to my own advice). Do a search. These are major issues. If you're bored, get an S/C. Cheaper and more reliable! Just my two cents. |

tho the 1m may match or even exceed z4m's performance since it's newer and what not, to me, it's nowhere near the exclusivity and fun factor of the z4m to warrant the switch, afterall, it's still a 4seater vs a real 2 seater sports car of z4m

If your debating between the 335 or the M3, I'd say go with the M, but thats just because i'm biased towards anything M and would not want to leave the M family for a "normal" bmw. Not to say the 335 isnt a beast after a few mods tho. As about the 1M, I dont see how you can even compare the two aside from sharing similar names... (Z4 M Coupe VS 1 Series M Coupe) Plus, you're going to be seeing a whole lot more 1M's compared to M coupes/ roadys

The Z4M is a true M car with engineering and performance equal or superior to the E46 M3. They just weren't able to use the name "MZ4" apparently. The 135M is just an option package, not a true M car. The Z4Ms were true M cars. It is not a small difference.

The 1M is a true ///M being developed by the ///M boys, with the M3 LSD. While it is a real ///M, and as much as I want to love it, it's no M Coupe replacement. If the projected numbers are correct regarding Hp, it's going to bearly have more than the S54 in your coupe, have a curb weight around the same, but have a shape (1 series) that is hard to love. I can't see that as an upgrade at all. now if the HP bumps up closer to 370, and the weight drops 100lbs, than it could be fun car, but it still wouldn't have the classic sports car lines of the Coupe.

Where are you getting this info? All I have read says the engine specs are not going to be released until late in the year. It doesn't make sense for the car to have only 35 extra hp over the 135i(They did not call the Z4 or 3 series with this mill an M did they?). No M car ever been so similar to its standard brethen. I am betting it will have a modified N55 with over 350hp. If not, it isn't a true ///M car in my book.

Again - none of those threads have any definitive info about the engine being an N54. It is all speculation by car rags(and forum members) who frequently get it wrong. If it is the N54(which I doubt), I expect it to be stronger than 335hp. Otherwise, the car should be called the 135is

Given BMW's shameless dilution of the M brand with trucks like the X5 and X6, I will reserve judgement until the product is on the street and tested by the usual sources.
