Hard drive music problem...
Has anyone had a problem with the downloaded MP3 media on the hard drive suddenly not working or playing the selection. I have had this happen on several ocasions where I would scroll throught the selection and choose a title from the screen and it not play. The radio would play with no problem. It seems the hard drive cannot find the selection or download the MP3. The only way it would correct itself is to shut down the car and restart. This seems to be a problem with the sound system hard drive or then again it could be operator error. Anyone experiencing this problem? Thanks

Yeah, but not in a long time. And I don't think I've had my system updated, unless the dealer did it without telling me. A very annoying bug, so here's hoping it won't come back.
It still plays the songs in alphabetical order rather than the order in which they are on the albums |

yes it happens to me on occasion. most of my listening is from the hard disk. i would guess i have seen it 3 times in 7 months. don't know if its the hard disk itself or some type of decode issue.
as for playing songs in alphabetical order, i believe it depends on how you access your tracks. mine play in album order. i access like this: select : rolling stones -> exile on main street -> rocks off (first track). at this point, the entire exile on main street album will play in album order. on a side note, the newly remastered exile has a new track called plundered my soul that is pretty damn good. |

Not had the problem referred to in the original post, but I have always been frustrated by the music being played in alphabetical order. I will certainly try your method and see what happens.

I don't really agree with the logic of Music Search, but at least I know what to do now. Either get a bigger USB stick, so I can import all the tracks at once and not end up with 4 separate folders for all my music OR read the manual to see if there's a way to merge those folders afterwards. Thanks Mike! |

It would seem it's a lot easier to use your iPod as the music source. Not only will you not have these access issues, but you won't take up space in the car's hard drive that would otherwise be used to store maps (if you have NAV).

I think a certain amount of space is dedicated to music so it would not add space for maps..... They load as needed anyway, don't they ??
WRT using the iPod or iPhone. I hate connecting and disconnecting and if I leave it in the car in Florida temperatures it destroys the iPod. Already did that once - expensive lesson on heat !! The iPod was so hot you could not touch it !! i like random play and that does not seemt o work either..... you have to reset it to random each time and then it is not random anyway (from time to time).

Remember, to download stuff to the hard drive you have to use the USB connector in the main glove box not the center console.
One issue I have with the thumnb drive transfer is that each time you do it the car creates a separate folder and there appears to be no way to 'merge' folders / files. It works fine but more difficult to find what you are looking for.

Where the main USB port?
Can you take a picture of the glovebox and pointing the location of the USB port? I was unable to find it in the glovebox...
Thanks! |

Page 103 in my owner's manual just show the cover page for Mobility. I guess the USB in the glovebox is for NAVs. Mine is not equipped with that option. Thanks Memphis.

It is for iDrive equipped cars as that is the one that has the hard drive for both NAV and about 40GB free for music storage from the glove box USB prt shown above in darbs330post.
The USB in the center console is for playing music only as you cannot transfer from it to the hard drive. Not sure why they did it that way but ....... It actually works like the iPod and its costs much less and is not really prone to the temperasture issues and you can easily leave it connected all the time if you use a thumb drive. Considering you can buy a 32GB thumb drive for a fractiomn of a iPod or iPhone it is a good alternative and easy to update.

I took a pic of my upper left hand corner of my glovebox. Is the hole where the USB would be? Then, it looks like I don't have it. Thanks all for your help.

if you do not have idrive, i believe you do not have a hard drive. no hard drive and so no need for a usb port to import music to the hard drive.

Right . Only iDrive cars have the nav hard drive which has the 40G space allocated for importing music. So no iDrive no USB port. Sorry !!

Not quite right. 40 G is the total disk space. 12 G is allotted for music.

The entire music system in the s35i is a mashup mess. Multiple inputs with scant integration and even less logic (1-disk CD, 6-disk CD, USB glovebox, iPod center console; radio (5 kinds), and HD-stored). Display mechanics that vary from source to source; none give full info. It's a Microsoft approach, not Apple. This is not BMW's finest hour.
My suggestion: find a music mode (2, maybe) that works for you and leave the rest alone. |
