Got pulled over for 50% tint all around!

So last night I was driving , actually I was at a stop sign. (Allendale area) Across the way is a cop, he decided to follow me for about 15 feet before pulling me over. He was probably early twenties, Im in my late twenties. He decides to run a whole gamet of questions like "Who doesn't have their seatbelt on", "Why is your front license plate not mounted in the middle" (I have the gominigo tow hook plate thing). then he proceeds to tell me I have illegal tints. I have 50% all around, in my head Im wondering how you can even tell the windows are tinted. So he leaves comes back with a tint ticket.

Anyway, I'm not bitching that I got a tint ticket, just wondering if anyone knows how much the fine, the officer wouldn't tell me. Its 39:3-75 safety glass.

So how does this work in the US? You get a ticket, pay it, but don't have to remove your 'illegal' tints? And then you might get another ticket in x number of weeks time, but still don't have to remove the tints?

In the UK, you'd get a ticket, and be forced to remove your tints.

That just sucks because I decided to finally get my car lightly tinted. Having your windows tinted at 50% doesn't get any lighter than that.

I think in some places you have to take the tint off. this ticket just said safety glass, like if you have a broken windshield or something.

Damn, sucks to be ticketed for stupid stuff like that

Completely offtopic
I can't believe that everything is just estimated in America.
In Holland cops have special sensors that are placed on both sides of the window which then transmits a laser. The second sensor then measures the strenght of the remaining laserbeam.

Same goes for DUI testing. No stupid point-to-your-nose-tests but a breathanalyzer.

Also for the people saying that 50% is barely noticable... seriously, over here 25% is the maximum you can have and only the back and back-side windows. And 25% is already very noticable :P
Maybe the sun is different in America?

i'm going to do 50% when i get mine. I'll pay the fine and the stupid cops can just keep pulling me over and filling their pockets with my money... maybe someday they will have enough dough to buy an M3.

For now they can keep riding in their POS Caprice or Charger dreaming they were driving something else.

Tint is rated by the percentage of light transmission (how much light it lets through). So 25% light transmission is darker than 50%.

well 50 is illegal... in NY I believe the tints have to be no more than 70% which more than likely is stock. So when a cop pulls you over for 50% tints he has a legit reason and even more so when both NJ and NY are enforcing the law

thats unfair cuz im a cop and i drive pretty decent cars... 3 mercedes, m3 and a porsche coming. Just cuz you got pulled over for someone doing there job shouldnt be a reason for insult. If you dont want that situation then follow the law(s). Cops dont fill there pockets with your money the city/town they work for do. I hate giving tickets in all honesty but the number 1 cop killer in the USA are tinted cars so you will automatically be at risk for being pulled over

Everybody hates the police until they need them...whatever.

Do realize that the window tint / taillight out stops can often lead to the discovery of a different crime and that the minor infraction can serve to initiate the traffic stop?

I would guess that a fair number of impaired driver's have been caught based upon a minor equipment infraction and I have no problem with this type of stop if keeps the rest of us safe. Not too mention drug transport offenses and other crimes. Tim McVeigh got pulled over after the Oklahoma City bombing for expired tags...I guess that cop was being a dick too.

I have received one tint warning in my life and yanked the tint within a few days. I did not blame the cop as I was aware it was illegal. If I was going to bitch about it, I would complain to the legislative branch that made the law, not the cop charged to uphold it. I can't do the time, I not going to do the crime.

Granted a warning for you would have been nicer, but since we need to slowly move toward socialism and continued corporate bailouts, get used to getting nickel and dimed by the government.

Sorry for the rant, but getting pissed at someone for doing his job just does not seem fair to me.

thanks for the heads up. I spoke to a buddy of mine who is a deputy officer the other day at jujitsu, I told him the story, and he agreed that the cop could have made a positive impression rather than the way he handled things. Not sure if I mentioned the other things that the officer did but, he tried to tell me that my front gominigo license plate holder was illegal, asked me if I had drugs in the car, if I had been drinking (because there was a redbull in the cup-holder I presume), he doubted us that we had our seat-belts on. This whole incident reminded me of when I was 17-18 obeying the law and would get pulled over and the cop would try to intimidate, interrogate, and when all else failed he would offer a careless driving ticket or a seat-belt ticket.

im thinking of redoing my tint at 70%. I really dont care for tinted windows just like the smoked glass look with gunmetal wheels.
