Brake Squeal

Hi All, I have an annoying squeal from my back brake on braking (naturally!). Normal? Any suggestions of how to get rid of it? Dosen't happen on hard braking only on softer braking. Car SDrive35i.

Thanks!

If it something minor more than likely it's some rust or similar on the rotor that will go away with use.

Otherwise, BMW have to remove the pads/rotors and replace them.

you gotta remember everything needs to be broken in. tires, brakes, exhaust, engine, clutch (if manual tranny).

Here's a procedure I've learned, and used, to break in new brakes (on a new car and after any brake job)
  • Find a road with little to no traffic, and proceed with caution
  • From 40 mph, apply maximum braking until you're down to 10 mph
  • Repeat from 50 mph down to 10 mph
  • Repeat from 60 mph down to 10
  • Repeat again from 70 then 80 mph

Never come to a complete stop during the procedure to avoid heat sinking and warping the hot rotors.

This procedure sits the pads to the rotors and should help avoid noise or warped rotors later on.

That's what I did when I got the car. No squeals what so ever and feels great.

That's basically Brembo's break in procedure. Read more at http://www.zeckhausen.com/bedding_in_brakes.htm

Yeah, I forgot where I first heard of it, but variations on that theme are found all over.

My break squeal is back, and scared the living shit out of me today.

My right rear break has been making a bit of noise for a while now, but today on the highway at about 130km/h I braked a little bit.... then the right rear break sounded like it got stuck. I hard squeal noise appeared for about 15 seconds, luckily it went away after. Gonna bring my car in for a checkup today, dont want that to happen again.

Check for any kind of small rock or debris that can cause a squeal, otherwise get it in for a check...

( the posted sequence for breaking in the brakes is great but I save time by just doing 120mph down to 30mph ....just kidding folks , my car is "run in" just fine.)

New pads are very easy to over heat and creat a glaze on the surface. If the above break in procedure does not work and there is no debris (rocks) stuck in the caliper you may need to pull the pads. Pull the pads and sand off the layer of glaze and also add a coat of anti-squeal to the back side of the backing plate. Re-install and follow the bedding procedure.
