Break in.

I have a big problem keeping the revs under 4000 rpm.

How did you guys do? Any tips?

50 km and 1950 km to go........................

My break in was done in the winter. Made it much easier. No idea how I'd be able to follow break in procedures if it was nice and sunny.

It took extreme restraint on my part. I just kept telling myself that it was worth it. I just hit 1200 miles last week. When I finally went out and really pushed it, it was SO exhilarating. So fast. So fluid. So fun!

I can see that I'll have a hard time "just driving" from now on.

I have not red-lined yet. Maybe this weekend.

Oh, and I should say that I "accidentally" hit 5000 RPMs a couple times before my 1200 miles were up

As long as the engine is properly warmed up, I pay no attention to the revs (I've never redlined it yet though). Some say you shouldn't exceed the limit during break-in, others say you should or you'll end up with an engine a lot less powerful than it's supposed to be. Go figure.

It's been like that for decades. I built a chevy 350 LT1 with a little goodies (all parts new) and i floored that one after 100 Km. Some say I was crazy, but I had put my heart to that engine (blueprinted it) so i wasn't worried.

Had a lot of fun for many years. With a little maintenance.

I know small block chevys can take alot but i guess BMWs inline 6 also is very good engine even if it's lightyears between them. And a different kind of motor.

I just have to calm down.......the waiting is over and now we have to wait again! I belive a mix of drivingstyles should be fine.

The car needs more superlatives!

I heard that too. I couldn't resist I went up to 6k-7k once in awhile when passing. I just forget. It was easy to break mine in since I drove back and forth to L.A. the first weekend I got it, therefore my break-in only lasted within week's time.

I hope you took the beautiful Costal Highway 1 and not the 101.

Good break-in means always warming up the motor properly to +90°C and
driving in different RPMs ranges.
It is no problem to touch 6k-7k for some seconds.
Good breaking-in requires a mixture of City, curvy roads and motorways.
Long distance motorways with contant RPMs at 60-80 mph is not good.

There is a company car break-in guideline that BMW gives to employees.

I know the feeling, having a hard time too not to go over 4000 rpm

1050km done 950 to go (sort of, I don't think I'll manage until 2000km)

How NOT to go over 4000rpm ? Well, don't use S-mode ... (if it's a DCT/auto that is)

Oh I had L.A. traffic to deal with stop and go (doesn't matter if you are on the 405, 205, 101, 110, 215, 10, 15 or 5) always traffic somewhere. I certainly had variable speed. If I lived in L.A full time, I don't think I would want manual transmission.

With the 35i, it's easy since it has so much low-end torque. I remember test driving the 30i and that engine is a lot more rev-happy.

I upshift at 4,000 which means I occasionally reach 4,500. Yesterday I got carried away and reached just above 5,000. I'm just short of 1,000 miles.

It's amazing how the engine gradually "opens up" and wants to rev more!

Another thing I do is that if I hit full throttle I immediately back off a little (but not too much!) as sustained full throttle operations aren't recommended during break in.

The most important thing about breaking the engine in, however, is seating the piston rings in the very first few miles. I did this with low rpm, heavy load driving i.e. climbing hills in high gear at almost full throttle.

Another week and I'll reach the magic number, change the oil and redline that engine in a mad 0-100 mph run to celebrate!

Like the other posters have said, a little restraint (which is tough with a MT, I know) and no sport mode.

Although I did find myself shifting at 4-5000 RPM's once or twice during the initial break-in, hey what can you do?

my thoughts towards it were f*ck it! ahah
i've had car red-lined loads of times overtaking since 100miles or so.
cars got about 6000miles so far and no problems,
dont know how it will last in the long run, but i'll change the car in a couple of years!

i took the engine thru it's necessary revs and loads gradually and at around 2k miles i did a 'launch control' to 100mph, then at around 3k i reset the ECU for the tranny and now it's "butter" smooth.
