My 1,200 Mi. Service

So I got my 1,200 mile service done today at Princeton BMW here in NJ. I must say I was highly impressed. They did exactly what I requested without even giving me any fuss.

So once I picked up my car I drove it around the city until the oil temps were up to operating...then I floored the monster onto the highway...one word...WOW. Now before I thought the car had plenty of power up to 5,500, but god damn after 5,500 its like you just engaged a jet engine or something. I am absolutely loving it...at the same time hating it...you press that accelerator down and you look down 2 seconds later your at 90...I'm scared of getting my license taken away, lol.

Just thought I'd share my positive experience with service and car, take it easy guys.

Quick question guys...since I've gotten the service done when I get out of the car after doing some spirited driving the exhaust smells like burning something...I popped open the hood to see if some oil was leaking or something and nothing...is this normal? Usually exhaust gas smells like well...gas...not burning oil or something like that...

Also damn...BMW has got to do something about those 3 latches on the hood PITA to get the hood closed, lol.

No burning smell here. Actually from the exhaust itself or the engine? I wonder because you searched under the hood. If it's the engine area, they probably spilled some oil and it's burning off--but check that the oil cap isn't leaking (the seal on the cap has an issue where it doesn't seal well sometimes).

If this is a 6MT they change the transmission oil too and 1,200, as well as the diff fluid. Any of those things getting on the exhaust will burn when heated.

If it's from the exhaust itself--that's not good. So I'm hoping it's some spilled oil or fluid. Check under the car as well and report findiings/more details back here.

Read electronic dipstick it's right at the triangle. I checked the engine bay and no spillage and nothing under the diff either. It's coming from the exhaust after hard driving. Also I read the manual about how to close the hood and it says drop from 10 inch and I did...the center latch closes but the two side latches don't I have to push down right ontop of the latches to close it...is that ok? Do I run the risk of bending the hood or something?

That hood problem doesn't sound right. I would see if it needs adjusting. Try turning the rubber stoppers down a little. They might be a little high and causing this problem.

Just drop it from 2 feet ( with the hands helping)it will be fine. mine needs dropping from a bit more height to close properly.

the latches need to be lubricated, i had same issue with my car when i just got it, and this is what i was told by my SA. have bmw do it or do it yourself, i hope it will help.

When they do the 1200 mile service, do they do anything else, or just the oil change?

I was thinking more along the lines of reflashing the ECU with more aggressive timing, etc.

Thanks,

Asheesh

On my car, they also changed the rear differential fluid, air filter and did a diagnostic check for any ecu codes. I know, changed the air filter with only 1200 miles? But I actually checked and they did change it. Seems kind of excessive, but BMW must have a reason for it.
