Very tempting at the 100k price tag.
Under cuts the M3 by alot and is still below the 335i.
Perfomance bang for your buck car of the year?

In that case it is confirmed pending on final board approval . 100k list will mean 120k on road, that would be cheaper than I expected.

Climate comfort windscreen please for Australia... (Everything else would be as expected from a ///M, ie LSD )

If it comes in at 100k it'll be a surprise to me but it's still a 30k premium over the stock standard 135i. If it's around 100k I'll maybe have to consider upgrading... Us 1er's will always have M envy!

I'm guessing it will end up being in the 120-130k mark driveaway. Only if it's a proper M though. I get the feeling it's going to be half arsed...

I think that would be too close in pricing to the M3. BMW will want some price differentiation there as they've stated their whole reason for launching an M1 is to encourage younger buys to the performance brand. Not much point in making it if it's going to be just as expensive as the M3 and Z4M.

If it's around the $130k on road I would seriously consider a 2008 M3. Its more than who's quicker than who. The M3 is one helluva, mother fking, ass-kicking V8!! The M3 is a legend with lineage. You'll always be thinking "jeez, shoulda bought an M3...." Of course, not that I'm biased or anything......

thats well biased, and a little insulting on a 1addicts board, and as performance is not the reason to buy an m3 it seems only snob value is? i would predict an m1 will eat alive a 3 year old 4 door m3.

Biased, maybe..But we are all biased to some degree..
Insulting and snob value..Dont think so..

Performance was never mentioned as the only reason to by an M3..... Overall package maybe.

And we are all only speculating what power output the M1 will have..So as far as which car will eat what car..who knows..chill out..

Some of us actually prefer the 1 series over the 3 series. We take the good with the bad considering the price difference. I chose a 135i over a 335i and pocketed the price difference. No regrets here. I'll probably spend another 10k on performance and cosmetic mods and still be cheaper than a stock standard 335i.

Overall, I see the 135i as better value considering what the 335i is and how much it costs. Maybe the M1 will be a similar hit. Maybe it will be just as good as it's big brother the M3, we just don't know yet. One thing for sure, it will be cheaper and it will be FI so we can do cheap easy mods to it too. Imo, there is much more appeal in buying a car that has just come out onto the market as opposed to buying an M3 which has been on our roads for a few years now. In a couple years they will be talking about the next gen M3 already.

I've never seen the 1 series as an inferior class to the 3 series, I've owned both and there's not much in it. If BMW make an M1 I'll consider it over the M3 for sure.

+ 1

I wouldn't touch a 4 door 3 series, no matter what engine it has, but I don't say it because it is offensive to people with 4 dour 3 series... 3 Coupe on the other hand is something I would look into. Although, just like BMW86, I was choosing between the 335i and the 135i. I prefer the smaller size and fun factor of the 1 more. I met a fellow member a week or so ago and he has both 135i and M3... his M3 has been driven 2 or 3 times in the last 8 months... He drives the 135i everyday and loves it more!

If they do a proper job on the 'M1' then I would consider it. But problem is the current shape is going to be 3 or 4 years old by the time it comes out

I'd rather have a cayman S for that cash. I have borrowed a friends and although with straightline pace there's nothing in it - the handling and feel is vastly superior imo. Can get a nice second hand for 110.

Am I missing something here? Why would BMW bring out another model of the current 1 series when it has less than 18 months to live. Is the M1 to be based on the current model or the new model?

Why buy it if the new model is due?

Market opportunity - last 6 cylinder on a 1er.

My turn.

I own both 135i and M3 and IMO the 3 wins all the way, aesthetics, performance, inclusions as standard (yeah at a huge $ premium), aspirational value.

Further to the 1M myth, why would BMW Australia be "rumored" to be coming up with an upgraded 1.... 1M or M1??

http://www.goauto.com.au/mellor/mell...25768700272DFE

The current edition of Motor Mag talks in a similar vein, "BMW Aus can't hold out for Munich much longer and plans a limited run of hot 1 series cars". 240kw and some of the performance upgrades would also to be included.

Anyway that's just my 2c worth.

For sure, if I had an M3 or a 135i I would be racking up the km's on my M3 much faster than the 135i. But if you had an M1 and an M3 it would be a tougher decision, especially if the M1 was faster, lighter, more nimble and more exclusive of the 2 cars. I'm sure when the numbers are out the M1 will give the M3 a good run for its money on the drag strip and on the track and if it does get beaten the M3 owners will go on about the M1 being too ugly or cheap on the inside
