Would you do it? M5 for M3!!
Well, I got a 2009 M3 AW 6MT and had it for about 7 months now. Got a hold of an add where this dealer would (if I considered it) sell me his 2007 M5. I looked at it and it has all the options mine has plus hella lot more. Still not really sure if that is what I want. I mean the car is pure bliss. The M5 that is. But of course it does not have the new IDrive. Other than that its fully loaded. What do you guys think? I can provide more info if you need more on the cars....

So many great things about the M5 and I'd have to consider it for awhile, but I'm pretty positive I'd keep the M3. In large part, this is due to the feel of the M3. The m5 is comfortable, but to me the M3 has more of a sporty, small-rocket feel that never fails to make me grin.

I wouldn't do the swap mainly because the E60 model is already out of production and the new model is about to come....you'll end up with an out-dated M5.

Also, consider that the M3 and M5 are two very different cars with the M badge being one of the primary things they have i common. If you are considering switching without some big reason (need more space for example) I would think long and hard about what it is you are actually trying to accomplish with the switch. In other words, don't switch cars for the wrong reasons. |

I don`t own an M3 but I`d rather step in an M6 if I were to swap the M3 for something else..
other than that, the M3 may not have the power output and V10 sound of an M5,but sure is a better performer when it comes to handling ,plus your M3 still has the factory warranty |

I've considered it and probably would do it if it wasn't for the fact that I can't find an M5 with lower Km's than my M3. My 08' has 14000Km.

As for the classic beauty, not a big fan of the E60 body style.

If you are tired of the M3 and really want to buy something else or must have the M5, then why not. But don't take it lightly. After all, you are going from an '09 model with longer waranty to an older car. Putting aside the cost of making the switch, the best thing you can do is to take the M5 for an extended test drive. Back to back driving of your M3 and then the M5 should really help out in this case. The V10 sound and power are amazing. It won't feel as nimble as the M3 and you will notice that. That is the biggest change from one car to the other but the M5 hides so well and better than most of its competitors that it won't really be an issue for everyday driving unless you want to take it to the track. Both great cars.

The F10 M5 won't make to the US until late 2011 or early 2012. You'll see it in Europe before the US of course. So, the current M5 owners or soon to be E60 M5 owner can enjoy the car for some time before the next model arrives. Even then, unless you are willing to pay 100K US dollars for a well optioned brand new M5, some owners such as myself will continue to drive the "outdated" M5 and then pick up a nice, clean low mileage one and save a whole bunch. By the way, I still enjoy driving my "outdated" E46 M3 and seeing the new ones doesn't bother me. I may pick one up in the near future. There is nothing wrong with driving the older model cars.

I would not. The gas mileage (I got about 10.5mpg in mine)and SMG are just two reasons not to. I think the M5 is a fantastic car but it's not good enough to leave an E9x M3 for. Now, if you need the extra room then I would perhaps think a little longer about it....but in the end, I'd wait to see what the 400hp 550 turbo feels like.
Even though you would have 500hp at your fingertips in the E60M5, the E9x M3 actually "feels" faster to me. |

If I were in the market for an M car, I would get a used M5 and get the stroker engine. All this for the price of a new M5...
