From 335 to M3
Okay so I'm sure someone has asked this question before but I didn't know how many former 335 owners had JB+ as I do now.
I'm thinking of making the switch from a loaded E90 335 6AT with JB+ to a loaded E92 M3 with DCT. I'm afraid I'll miss all that low end torque. I would just get another 335 but I've had a lot of HPFP issues and would rather just go back to a NA engine. Thoughts?

Do ett!!! low end torque is cool BUT!!! I was driving around one day when a 335 with "A bunch of mods" claimed the owner pulled up next to me at a light. he said he had: ECU flash, intake, and exhaust. light turns green he punches it, and I decied to play. I hear all this talk about modded 335's and low end torque so I thought he'd take me. I decide to go for it too. story ends with me in front and him giving me a thumbs up and we returned friendly smiles and drove off. never went over 50mph. speed limit there was 45 but still a fun little run.
so ... DO ET!!!

thanks for the input guys. not that i would expect anything less than perfection from an M I just want to make sure I don't spend all this money and not LOVE the car.
If anyone else has anything to chime in on please...

I came from a 335i, as well...2007 E92 with Turbo Tuner to be exact. I don't miss the torque at all. As a matter of fact, I very much prefer the more progressive power delivery of the M over the somewhat light switch on/off feel of the 335.

I came in for my M3's 1200 mile service and got a 335xi coupe as a loaner for two days. The 335xi indeed has the torque that everyone says it has but the power delivery is not as satisfying as the M3. I prefer the linear power band the M3 puts out and the handling is far beyond better. I definitely couldn't wait to get back into my car.

again. thanks u guys for all of the input. the closest M3 with DCT is 2.5 hours away so I'm going to go test drive it on Saturday. I'll let you guys know what I think. If I get back to my area in time I'm going to go look at the new S4, the C63, and the IS-F.

After getting use to 425 lbs feet of torque and excellent fuel efficiency, I must say I am really enjoying my 335d and could not give it up for a E9X M3. For mainly city driving it's the perfect car for me and offers a great balance of performance, comfort, reasonable operating costs, and overall value. I think my days of high reving NA engines are gone for day to day driving.

Yes they do.
A secondary gain is the development of close friendships with service station cashiers.

I came from a E90 335 6mt with Turbo tuner, full borla exhaust with cat bypass, twin filter intake. i did about 26,000 miles with the 335, and have done 14,000 miles with the M3 up to now in 10 mounth.
Sure the 335 had great torque and easy to drive but not much top end. i really really dont regreat switching to a E90 6mt M3. But like other said, its not all about the motor, the handling / fell of the M3 is much better then the 335, feels lighter in some ways. Handles so good from the factory, making me not want to get coils incase the handeling could be unbalanced from the factory set up that i like. The motor kicks ass, the power band is soo long with the V8, just keeps on pulling. Makes you wanna bounce the rev limiter, versus the 335 made you wanna short shift before the redline. i have the exact same options in the M3 then i had in the 335. so its easy to compare the differences. One thing i notice alot with the M3, is when your alone in the car, its a beast and feels so fast and agile. but when you get more then 2 in the car in city driving, you start to feel it alittle more compared to the 335 with its low end torque. So you need a bit more rpm when loaded versus the 335. The only down side on the M3 is the fuel economy, on the 335 you can use the low end torque and not consume to much fuel avg. versus the v8 drink more. But unless you do a ton of mileage, the difference is negligable. Both are great car, but for me the M3 is worth all the extra $$. and would'nt even consider switching back. |

To the OP... have you driven a M3 yet? I am not saying what you should do, but surely you need to have driven both for a few days before making your selction... although I know what I would get.

I still have my 335 (Dinan flash), the torque is fantastic, but still it doesn't beat the high rev V8 of my M3, the sound of that V8 alone makes driving the M3 a thrilling experience. Test drive the M, take it through a couple of hard turns, play with it a little, then you'll know why they put that M badge on there, it's just a different driving experience. Best of luck to you bud.

I thought I'd miss the torque as well but trust me there are sooooo many other things that make up for it that you will NOT regret making the switch.
Good luck on whatever you chose though! |

I just finished a test drive of the M3 and 335 today. I drove the 335i first, and it was fun but I was actually a little disappointed because I didn't feel it lived up to all the hype it gets from this board (nothing personal to 335 owners). On the other hand I was hoping that the M3 wouldn't live up to my expectations and I could save some dough. However, I'm still wearing my shit eating grin from the Autobahn test drive - fun, fun, fun, fun, fun.

With the torque curve starting at 4k I feel like it gets rewarding each and every time I go thru the paces with this car. When you get to that power band, you definitely feel the beast pull!

try to test a used M3 with DCT and use S6 (that's the fastest shifting manual mode for the trans). I think you'll immediately realize it's in a different league. I don't think anyone can drive an M3 with DCT in S5 or S6 and not be thoroughly impressed. That was a big driving factor in my decision to upgrade.
It's a much more emotional car, and superior in every way, IMO, with the exception of gas mileage. This is all coming from a current 335i 6MT owner with a 2010 M3 with DCT on order. |

I switched from a lightly modded manual 335 (coilovers, exhaust, wheels) to a DCT M3, and I could not be happier. The M3 is a much different machine--more satisfying to drive in almost every way. If all you care about is straight line speed, then you may be disappointed - however, driving is all about feel and feedback to me, and the M3 delivers that in ways that the 335 never will. I have also driven a friend's JB3 tuned 335--it was exceptionally fast and a great car on its own merits, but I would still take the M3 hands-down.

the closest dealer with an M3 with DCT is two and a half hours away and when I called to make an appointment to drive down and see it they told me its sold and being delivered tomorrow. So I guess I need to just drive it and make my decision that way. I'll never know until I do.
