Strange sound/noise after hard driving

I say strange because it sounds like a cooling fan that is running behind the driver side REAR wheel. I would expect it coming from under the hood but not the back of the car.

It happens after I've driven the car hard and park it. When I get out, I hear a fun running behind the rear wheel. Something to cool the diff? Thoughts comments???

Thanks,
BC

battery fan, all the cars have them. Exhausts any gases that may have collected or will collect as the battery cools.

Are you sure about this? Battery's on the passenger side and the sound is on the driver's side. I can hear it distinctly when I kneel down beside the driver side rear wheel and the sound diminishes as I go to the other side of the car. So I'd be surprised if it's associated with the battery. This is my 7th new BMW over the past 10 years and I've never heard this before....

Your' right, I heard the fan sound on the passenger side of my 335, maybe the vent is routed differently on the M3

O.K....very weird. Until last night, I hadn't heard this so called fan. I can't imagine it has anything to do with the battery. As previously stated, the battery is on the other side.

Anyone else have thoughts on this?
