New DCT software due April or May

I was at the dealer today, and in talking to my favorite SA she told me that the next DCT software release is slated for April or into May. She had no other details on what may be in this new release, but she was also well aware of the lag issue. Charleston isnt the largest of M3 markets, as she thinks that only a dozen DCT cars or less have been sold here, but im not the first to ask about it so she did some searching. Anyway, she also said that they plan on releasing an entirely new iPod adapter from the dealer parts department that will better match the 6FL option. Promising news hopefully on both fronts.

OT: Got a chance to drive the new 750 and wow. Super impressed. Its a polar opposite of the M3, but the TTV8 is smooth and effortless and would even spin the tires on the freeway when you floor it. 400+HP and 450 something Tq is sweet. One other cool feature I noticed was that the owners manual was programmed into the Idrive.

Thanks for the update. I hope if true AND fixes the lag.

LAG seems to be a theme with BMW. The E90 guys have it with the turbo's since a flash was introduced last year, and we've been suffering with it on the DCT, which is going into much larger production with the next 3 series and Z4. They better get the bugs out.

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."

Sounds like she may just be hedging her bets rather than giving you an answer based upon any info from BMW. Anyone can search via google and see that March has been the prevailing rumor, and since that window is quickly closing, April or May sounds better.

One thing I can tell you it takes 6-7 hours for the software update.

What software version did you get? When did you get the update? Are you saying there was little or no improvement?

"the update"?

Which one? There have been many updates, and some updates to do not effect the M-DCT control unit firmware at all. Without more info, sadly, your post is not providing anything useful, and will more than likely lead to a very long drawn out discussion full of speculation, hoping, wishing, and debate.

I was at my dealer two days ago to schedule my 1200 mile service (tomorrow! Yay!) and I asked about the DCT update. The SA checked things and said there is no new update as of now. So, Joseph did not get a newer update than the current one.

My dealer sells a bunch of M cars..... They are pretty knowledgeable.

I will find out tomorrow from my dealer which version I received on Monday.

But the "Message" that he read to me in "Germany/English" was from BMW for the newest update. Can anyone tell me what the current update verison is?

-If it is the newest update there is NO change in the 2nd Gear lag...if anything it made it worse. So fingers crossed I dont have the newest update!

Joseph, if that is what you have, then you do not have the latest AFAIK. The update that most of us got that fixed the paddle/shift lag, stalling, and the ddownshifting under hard braking is 31.1 if I recall. Someone will correct me if I am wrong there. There was a 31.2 but per a couple members accounts, that one did not have any M-DCT updates (i.e. it did not update the M-DCT CU firmware).

I suspect that you actually have the latest we are all aware of, which is 31.2. I don't think you have the old version, and I also don't think you have a brand new version that just came out.

I dropped off my car this morning for the "lag issue" and a few other things. I took the shop foreman out for a drive and demonstrated the lag issue. We spoke of it being a software issue (most likely). I told him I heard there was a new update coming in April/May and he confirmed that, but added he did not know yet what it covered/corrected. I will share info if I find out anything...

Noticed that the date/month they are giving us is not certain. First it was rumored around March. Now it is April/May. It can be early April or late May. For me I will just wait and hope that the fix will come. A later date is fine with me as long as they fix the problem.

Heres to hoping that its just BMW taking their sweet time in making a quality upgrade. And I dont blame local SA's either because they know just as much that BMWNA tells them, which is never very much before something comes out.

I'm supposed to take my car in this Friday for "the" update to the DCT software. Should I go through with it? Are there any negatives to it?

Find out what Progman version they intend to download. If it is v31.2 or earlier, recommend you tell them you'll wait for the next release (supposedly Apr/May timeframe) that is supposed to nail the lag/hesitation safety issue.
