Aren't xi's supposed to be good in snow??
Okay..I dont want to gripe, but I can't help noticing this.. My 2006 530xi drives terrible in snow.. It skids a lot if there's snow atleast 2-3 inches.. I don't have any alerts on my system like "All wheel drive failure" or "DTC Malfunction". I dont have any snow tires either.. But still, why the hell it should skid like that???
Sometimes I feel whether a rear wheel drive car drives better in snow than my 530xi.. Comments anyone??

Just one thing...you need WINTER TIRES...put them on,and you will find what you are looking for.
You can not expect from xdrive miracles without WINTER TIRES on snow! Good luck! |

+1 on this. If you put a set of good winter tires on, your car will turn into a beast in the snow. I put Blizzak LM-25s on my E90 and that's what happened. Not sure exactly how it will effect your car, but I'm sure you will get similar results.

you cant expect an AWD car to be excellent in the snow without the proper tires.
I have AWD with summer tires and omg....it is horrible. :2cents:

Any car driven in the snow with snow tires would terrible. In the owners manuals of e34 and e34 under winter driving tips snow tires are recommended as well 50lbs in the trunk. I currently have blizzaks on my 545 and it is unaffected by the snow.

Unless you get yourself some good quality snow tires, your x-drive system can only do so much. Also, even though you mentioned you do not have winter tires mounted, what tires DO you have mounted right now and in what shape are they. Even descent winter tires that are worn down will only perform well but not great. Winter tires use a different compound than all-season or summer performance tires. All-season tires usually start loosing their grip below 7degC. Winter tires usually also have a completely different thread pattern designed to hold snow within their threads as snow sticks better to snow than rubber! Anyway, you should definitely do some research on good winter tires for the next snowy season

You don't need winters, get high performance all-seasons and they work GREAT. I put Conti ExtremeContact DWS on mine and easily stopped faster than stock tires
