Another diff noise question

Today for the first time I have heard the diff grinding noise. Eg. While driving down the parkade (all right turn), and making right and left turns on the streets.

I have read pervious posts that suggest go to the dealer and they will change the oil to a different type, but here are my questions, is there any side effects of using that different oil, if not, why doesn't BMW just fill with this oil during the 1200 mile service.
Another question is will there be any harm if I just let it grind? If not, then I can live with the noise. (I guess there will be no harm from reading pervious posts, just want to make sure)

Just stating all the normal noises our cars make, clutch chatter, M cluck, diff grinding etc.

If you're of no help then why don't you just stay away, it sounds like you have obivously not read what I posted and just trying to piss someone off. I didn't even mention in my post about anything that didn't work for me.

PS: yes do kill youself.

Right, buddy. The idea is not to be a moron and to post your concern about the differential noise AND about the solution in the SAME THREAD where the noise is discussed. Makes for a better forum where people can find out information about 1 issue and maybe multiple solutions in one place, that's all.

Have a good one!

Why would you consider living with the noise when you know there is a service bulletin to address the issue? I did it yesterday and the noise is gone.

Check out this post, or you can read the whole thread. Tell them to look up: SIB 33 01 02 that's what the issue is in their system as. All of this was discussed in other threads.

The diff oil part number quoted in that post is for the Castrol SAF-XJ SAE 75W-140 oil which has been around for years and was one of the recommended dif oils for the E46 M3. The noise you hear is just stick/slip in the clutch pack and is nothing to worry about. However SAF-XJ is good at quietening the diff...I did some experimenting with it in a 911 turbo after talking with Castrols tech support and it solved the problem that Porsche couldn't fix despite rebuilding the diff with a new clutch pack.
