New E90 M3 Options DCT or 6MT

I am placing my order for a new E90 M3 this week and wanted to get some opinions. I have had the SMG in a 2002 M3 and a 6MT in a 2008 M3 (lost in accident) for 9-months. Now I am not sure if I should try the DCT in the 2009 M3? Is the DCT that much improved over the SMG? I have not driven the new DCT and wanted to get opinions about it compared to the 6MT.

Please let me know your opinions.

Thank You,

Biglare

Did you prefer the 6MT over the SMG? If so, stick with the 6 speed.

If not, test drive the DCT and see how it feels to you.

They offer more than one transmission? I can see how that can get confusing.

Not only transmission, but doors, color, interior... where have you been Sticky? In a cave? (sarcasm here if you're not sure).

Thank you for the responses and sarcasm. Both are appreciated. The DCT vs. 6MT was the only option left to decide. I am going with the following options:

E90
Brilliant White
Extended Fox Red
Carbon Leather Trim
Technology Package
Cold Weather Package
Premium Package
19" Wheels
Sunshades
Smartphone
Premium Sound
iPod USB Adapter
Satellite Radio
PDC

DCT or 6MT still deciding

I appreciate all of your help along the way.

Holy crap, wow, options, options. They should have a place where you can discuss those topics and allow others to see them and use/search them as a reference to help with their own decision. If such a place existed, I would assume there would be a lot of information already on the topic to sort through.

In seriousness though, the only thing I wish I would've ordered is the parking distance sensors and instead of getting the winter package, just get the heated seats - how often do you use your headlamp washers...and from listening to people, sounds like a pain in the ass when they go off anyway.

I'm probably gonna get some reaction to this, but... I can't imagine getting a car that doesn't have three pedals; MT is just a fundamental (and incredibly enjoyable) part of the driving experience for me (I don't commute)

So, if you're thinking this hard about it, just get the DCT. That said, I would still take a very close look at the traffic on this board about people's experiences with the DCT.

Agree go for the 6MT... anything else is just an automatic transmission no matter how you control it or how many clutches it has.

I assume th OP meant Alpine white and not brilliant.

I don't see the value added of the premium package. Two grand for a garage door opener and folding mirrors?

I've yet to see a thread about how their 6mt is over heating, or lagging, or sluggish, or anything for that matter. 6mt just works.

There's a tad bit more than that in the premium package.

I agree with ^. Just at least try it out so you can make an informed decision.

I would DCT. After driving a car for 3 years, it's easy to put the car in automated mode in traffic where with stick, you may hate it.

The DCT is not over heating, it is not sluggish, and it works fine - just like the 6MT. The DCT lag is indeed an issue (more for some, less for others) but it is a matter of time for an appropriate software release to fix this soon (according to BMW's responce to my letter on this, there will be a software out within March addressing specifically the lag issue).

It is amazing how people have such a strong negative view about the DCT, usually blowing the lag issue out of proportion and onto other non existent DCT "problems". Anyway, do yourself a favour and try the DCT so you can take your own informed decision.
