Gas dribbles out when filling up

Whenever I go to Shell stations, certain pumps will stop on me at only half full. When I take the pump out of the filler, gas spills out like it's overfilled. Anyone else experiencing this? Any suggestions?

Too bad I don't have BP in my area. Wish I did so I could test it out.

Yes, this behavior is consistent to overfilling the tank but I'm never close to full when it happens.

Never unless I'm forcing it to top off and put too much.

This actually DOES happen to me. It's because the nozzle isn't sitting right so it doesn't properly drain fast enough and it "thinks" it's full when it's not. Stop, give it a few seconds, and tilt the nozzle upwards. You may need to actually hold it instead of letting it pump on its own. It's happened to me before...

Yeah, it helps to put it on the first notch so it pumps slower... although I'm too impatient for that.

Had an issue at Shell also, without the tank being full and during normal flow, I got a splash back from the pump stopping abruptly which ran down the side. I was close to home so I got back and cleaned up right away.

That's what's happening with me. I'm getting tired of having to clean up the mess everytime and this is the first BMW or car that I've had this problem with.

Happened to me a couple times, I can't really seem to predict when it will happen or if.

Has anyone gotten better than 16 mpg average? With everyday driving as a DD, can we expect this amount?

I drive the car everyday... rabbit start all the time... I get about 16.5 -17.2 depending on my mood for that week. Cant seem to baby the thing to try and get any better. I am thinking about seeing jusy how low I can get it as a daily driver.

I also had this happen when filling up an M3 during a test drive. The first time I filled up my own car I made sure to have the pump stuck af far as it would reach and clicked it to the first notch and also stopped the pump before it was full. Even doing this, I still saw gasoline right at the edge of the filler hole when I stopped it. As I slowly pulled out the pump it allowed the gas to drain and I put in a little bit more gas but saw that the gasonline was coming back up the filler hole and then draining again. Seems like it will be a bitch to try and not get gasoline all over the car. The angle the pump sits at doesn't allow it to drain very well.

It's not big enough to fill the hole, that's what she said.

This is to be expected, you shouldn't do this anyway.
