2008 M3 -- 10k miles Update
I wanted to take couple min to provide an update as I am running around 10,500 miles right now. Here is my overall update:
Car Usage: - Bought Mid May 2008 - Daily driver, 50% highway - Drive veryyyy nice first 5k by the book Any issues: None, excluding trips to dealer for oil refills Things I don't like: - Location of the windows controls - Electronic oil gauge ( it takes forever to tell me crap) - As daily driver, have to be much more picky where I park Other Info: - Mileage: Family driving : 18.4miles/gallon Fun driving : 14 miles/gallon M3 Real driving: 9-10 miles/gallon - Replaced set of rear tires due to "M3 Real driving", and showing my son "what not to do" Things surprised me: - How much I like the Jarez Black - Stealth mode 4door, most cops ignore you unless they can hear your engine. Very happy I choose 4dr as it is my daily driver. - # of people want to know more about it in gas stations - 2 additional M3's in my 3 block radius after my purchase! I am extremely happy with my decision, and its a joy to drive! Looking forward to next 10k miles.

How often do you have to top off the oil?

Bluesummer, I get 21 pretty regularly. But most of my miles are long distance highway driving around 75 mph. |

Otherwise I'm seeing very similar MPG's, and no real issues (beyond some strange ones in the beginning that magically disappeared). But the cops do seem to pay more attention as you get closer to triple digits. Just an observation. I love my commute, even when it gets lengthy. It is just a terrific vehicle. |

18.4 -- Regular driving, no power mode. Gentle shifting on stops, mostly drive the car in higher gear(yes I know you dont feel the car), no coasting unless in gear. Just a good driver and oh in area I use Exxon, changed from Shell, that added at least 1-2miles/gallon for my driving habits. Avg is 60 miles/hr speeds. I start getting this mileage after 8k miles or so, dont know, car feel much more aggressive and reacts/feel perfect now(i fell this last couple thousand miles)
When i start peeling off on stop lights and have bit fun, i am down to 14, still no m-mode or nothing, called aggressive family drive. I usually get some nasty comments from my wife like "It feels like I am high school and in my brothers car" I started needing oil, after 5k miles, when i did "real" driving. I can confirm that oil <=> aggressive driving. when I was doing M3 driving, i needed oil every 2 weeks or so, 1 full quart, lights come on, and doing 9-12miles/gallon with that style driving. Did it for 6-7 weeks this type of driving. I am 3k or so from last oil add, and oil bar is 1/5 down, I expect the light will come on any day for me to get another quart of oil. But i am driving much gentle. Hope this helps.

I generally agree with Maymun's impressions. I got my coupe in March 2008, and now have 16K miles. Like Maymun, I am extremely happy!
My commute is about 40 miles each way. With EDC and M Drive, the car can be a comfortable cruiser when you just want to relax after a long day of work, but when you feel like it, you can push of the "M" button and turn it into an awesome performance machine. Though I have yet to go to the track (saving up for the M driving school first so I know how to handle this beast properly), I also have no doubt this car will be lots of fun when I do. I don't think there is any other car in the market that offers the versatility that this car does. The car has been everything I hoped for and more. Heck, even the rear passenger seats have proved to be surprisingly useful and comfortable, as passengers have told me. Also like Maymun, I have been surprised by the amount of compliments I have received about the car. While I don't buy cars to seek approval from others, I can't deny that there's something nice about getting compliments and thumb-ups from other drivers, including 911 drivers, and even a Maybach driver. My minor complaints: (1) Having to fill up 2-3 times a week, but I knew what I was getting into when I bought the car. Like the OP, I get about 18.4 mpg on average. That is with about 80% highway driving. I find that any amount of city driving will quickly lower the MPG. (2) The car only tells you to get an oil change every 15K miles. I question whether this is actually good for the engine in the long run so I plan to get an intermittent oil change before 30K miles. (3) BMW needs to put some grab handles or something for rear passengers because people back there have nothing to hold on to if the driver decides to have some fun on twisty roads during a road trip. My friends found out about this deficiency the hard way Otherwise, I have not had any problems with the car thus far (at least none that were not my own fault). After almost a year with this car, there still is no other car I'd rather own. |

Very nice update from authoritative sources with real experience. I only have 2K miles on mine but agree with all the observations. Very different from my 335 which had to go back to the dealer multiple times for updated parts, reprogramming, electronic faults etc. Plus when you take your 335 to the dealer you feel like a drug addict checking in at the police station, fearing that they will spot some little modification and void your warranty on the spot.

I'm only at 2,600 miles, but my experience is consistant with the longer term reports. Co's BMW in Loveland, CO installed the Dinan throttle bodies, 4.10 final drive and Active Autowerk Signature exhaust, so my mpg is down around 10%, but the noise level is up only 1 dB, so I'm pleased that I got more performance without a big noise penalty. (I expected the gas penalty and wouldn't have purchased the car if I couldn't afford to feed it no matter the price of gasonline).
The oil gauge doesn't bother me at all, since constant monitoring is better than me trying to remember to check it myself. Unless I hear reports of it not working, then I'm not going to worry. I figure that 8+ quarts of highest quality synthetic gives a nice safety margin. I like the tire pressure sensors and even put them on my snow wheels. I'm a little leery of my first flat and nothing but a can of goo in the trunk. Hopefully I'm never too far from a BMW flatbed, but here in the vast West (Colorado and surrounds) I'm AM worried about a shredded tire 200 miles from nowhere. Still, even with that fear, a love the vast tire choice that we have with non-runflat tires. Dave

Is everyone about averaging 18 miles per gallon? These numbers scare the heck out of me. I know it's a beast, but 9 miles to the gallon is a Lamborghini! And last time I checked, I drive was not installed in that stallion. |

Everything is fine on my end... 4k and no oil added... GPM is around 15-16 depending on my mood... I do not find this really bad since some of my other toys burn between 80-120 galons per hour.

8500 miles on my E90 and just had to add 1 quart of oil. 16.5 MPG avg (60% highway, some stop and go). I am on engine #2, however, so I guess I really had to add oil after 5 or 6K miles.
Love the handling compared to my 335i. I do a lot of track days and did get it to the track once. Very impressive for a "street car." Top end power is awesome, brakes got a little soft by the end of each session. Turned lap times better than my race car used to muster (until I upgraded ) High's: Instantaneous N/A throttle response Sound of engine, esp when you get on it the way the engine pulls hard from 3K to 8300 LSD in the corners Amazing front end grip for a "family car." Steering feel Corning grip - near race-car level Adjustable suspension - really transforms the car Ability to do controlled tail-out slides at will Interior (leather is 10x nicer than 335i's) Bulge on hood (reminds you you are driving something menacing) Looks - love the bulging fenders on the 4-door! Low's Fuel economy (sucks, even relative to its power. For comparison, a 552 HP V10-powered Lamborghini gallardo manages the identicle fuel economy while running the 1/4 mile in 11 seconds at 129 MPH) Premium Sound is good, but not $1900 good. Should have been better for the $ Tires are crazy expensive and wear out FAST, but they are probably the best street tire on the market so you get what you pay for 6-speed manual is decent, but nothing like my S2000's - BMW should study that one. Overall I believe it is "THE" Car to have for an all-around practical, reliable, crazy fun-to-drive, sports sedan. Definitely was the right choice.

7,500+ miles, sunny day driver. Only few issues are the trunk light has been out but just haven't gone back to the dealer to get it fix. Gonna do that on my next oil change. I'll keep the oil changes at about 8,000 since I had the 1,200 mile done so about every 7,000 should be good.
One other issue is there is a slight buzz from the right passenger door or the seat maybe when driving over less than smooth roads in "comfort" mode all the way up to Sport setting. Not a bad buzz, just noticable at low music volume. Other than that, so far so good. |
