Most miles a new car should have off the lot?
What is the highest mileage you believe is acceptable for a car to have and still be "new" when you buy it? I noticed a lot of cars I test drove before buying my 135 had between 200-500 miles already racked up, which is understandable due to the amount of test driving they go through but it certainly influenced my final decision when it came time.
Just curious what others have to say who didn't get their car right off the loading dock. |

I'd say around 20-40. Past that and it's a test-drive Mule.
Odometer when I picked up the 1.....1. It was awsome. |

I believe there was a rather long thread last spring about this on 1Addicts.
Personally, I would be wary of a BMW with more than a few miles on it. That means it has been used as a demo, and I'm sure prospective customers drive BMW demos harder than someone out for a demo in a Toyota, particularly the more enthusiast-oriented Bimmers. With a car like a BMW, I couldn't buy one that has been demoed. Maybe I am fussy, though, since I can't remember the last time I bought a vehicle I didn't factory-order. |

I wasn't happy that mine had 250 miles on it, but I got a great deal on an '08 and I took a chance since I didn't get to see the car beforehand. (came from another dealership) I have 4000 miles on it, and I haven't had one issue. It looked and felt and drove like it had a couple of miles on it. Also, I am leasing the car, so I don't plan to own it.

i received mine with 8 and at the dealership i work at 8 is the most common number because you have to test drive them for 5 miles and go to a gas station and fill up gas

If you are buying it off the lot you have to expect some mileage due to test drives, but I would use those as a negotiation point as well. They have big incentive to get the car out of their inventory, you do have leverage.

<10. It is hardly possible to get less than 2 since a car can't be all time towed and dealer should assure that car can run at all. However most of my cars had 40-60 miles because I purchase them of a dealer lot when next year’s cars start arriving.

My 135i had 1 mile on it when I got in it, and an empty gas tank. It hit 2 miles as the salesman and I were taking it to the station to fill it up.
In most situations I'd expect to see less than 200 miles on a car I'm buying off the lot. If it's something unusual, or has specific options I'm after, I'd probably put up with more. My GTO had 12 miles on it when I took it off the lot for a test drive and never gave it back. |

I know on my sales agreement it had 50kms as a max but I ended up getting it with less than 5kms (3 miles) on it.
As a side note, my car was not a lot car. I ordered it and waited 10 weeks for it and knew the VIN 1 week after I ordered it.

Mine had 42 km at delivery, but that's because my CA had to drive it over from another dealership. I thought that was pretty good when I found out the car was built in February.

well when I bought my Mustang GT back in 2000 it had 300 miles because it was a dealer trade from out of state and was driven to me. But the 135 I test drove had 9 miles on it and 15 after I was done.

Indeed, my car was built in March and I took it only in December. It had not so many miles for 9 months period, just a lot of dust. I guess everything good should take 9 months before getting delivered.

Anything over 40 and I'd demand a discount. Average test drive is probably 5 miles? That's 5 times someone's gone out and beaten on the car in the break-in period. Bad news. That's why you order it - get what you want and you know how it's been treated.
