Unhappy audio help!

Having some trouble getting my ipod to work. i have the sound package with usb hookup. i used my ipod connection cable (the one they game me with my car only had usb males on either end of the cable). do i have to use a "bmw" connector? can i not use my ipod cable? physically everything connects. just not getting recognized by the stereo. please help. many thanks!!––

I think you have to buy the BMW ipod cable (for a gazillion $) to get it to work properly. It uses USB & 3.5mm analogue sockets. This is all I've tried and it works well.
