Auto dipping mirrors shit me- sometimes!

Was on my favorite stretch of curvy road the other night and had a car that in silhouette looked like a cop car come up and sit on my tail. I could not make out if it was the cops because all I could see in the mirrors (i have auto on side mirrors also) was headlights and everything else was black. Anyway after painfully sticking to the 70km speed limit for 5km an upcoming street light revealed that it was a taxi behind me - I floored it, goodbye taxi...

I don't get it? so the auto mirror dips to prevent dazzle? I thought the auto mirrors were for reversing?

Yes, dimming. They dip and dim. In my wifes Lexus and my Golf there is a button to turn the auto dimming off, but BMW being a good German company decides when its going to dim and that's that!

Wouldn't it be easier to have slowed down to 60 from 70, let the sucker pass you, assess, and then blow him away??

Does take a little getting used to, but I actually like the auto-dimming exterior mirrors. As it is, if the car behind had caused the mirrors to be dimmed for the whole 5km, that meant for 5km it had it's headlights shinning into your rear-view mirror. Since cop cars are generally well-maintained and taxi's not, I would have ruled out a copper.

If the mirror is dimming too often, check that you have nothing blocking the front sensor on the windscreen side of the mirror. If too little light comes in, any stray light hitting the rearward facing sensor will trick the system into thinking you are being blinded by headlights from behind.
