You gotta love driving your car in D.S mode (performance mode). The car really moves. shift at higher rpms. I assume fuel mixture change because it sound a lot Meaner. I took off at stop at 3/4 throttle had second gear chrip. Awesome

It also has a locking stall converter feature, which is of great benefit to power transfer and performance... This particular auto trans is used in Fords and GM vehicles as well and does for some of them what it does for the 135i  It's my choice of trans for a 135i when I'm ready to get one, but if by then there's the 7sp DCT, I'll go for that instead |

If you like DS mode, try the M mode and paddle shift!

is it a ZF autobox?
It's going to be a change for me coming from two cars (golf and new TT) with DSG transmission, to a conventional auto box.

It truly is a great transmission but she has her quirks. Like when coming to a standstill, as it changes down gears you get a small but noticeable lurch forward just before coming to a complete halt when try to stop smoothly at a steady rate from say 40-60km/h. But the most annoying/quirky thing is a rough as guts gear change if you happen to be coming to a stop, but at lets say about 10km/h, suddenly try to accelerate (eg. cause the lights just changed to green), and bang she snaps into gear. Of course these are all in Auto mode, but regardless of D or DS mode.
Now I understand they have given the 6sp Auto a software and small hardware upgrade from the first lot of 6sp autos in the 1 series. So I'm hoping these have been dialed out.

Am'I wrong or a high % of the stick driver's go this way just to say they are driving a stick tranny ?
Ad in fact most of the time they regret but do it just because ''popular thinking'' said to them to chose the stick

it's a drivers car, stick is slightly better performance, mpg, and makes the driver feel more directly involved
that's why I choose a manual, until the new DCT comes out, my real complaint about auto's is the way they feel disconnected when you push on and off the gas, a manual does not |

As for the OP, the auto is incredibly good and the best I've ever driven. ZF did a great job on this.

Lately, autos have been better in fuel economy now that autos have the same number of gears and therefore gear ratios that manuals have. Plus, the smarts behind the autos has increased a lot.
For instance, the fuel economy is also better for the tiptronic S5 compared to the manual. So much so that the auto avoids gas guzzler status but the manual doesn't.

if they can just make the auto's lock all the way, drives me crazy when I left off the gas and the rpm drops, and when you hit the gas it lags getting back up to the right rpm

The new one is way better at what you are saying above. Especially if you drop it into DS mode. I notice that it doesn't drop the gear as quickly because I feel the engine compression of the higher revs.

if they can get it so the rpm's do not drop as soon as you let off the gas, and the engine stays at the right rpm with the gear your in, like a manual does, then I'm interested
the paddle shifters are ohh so cool |

the way to test is put it in gear, press and release the gas a few times, there should be no lag, and almost no movement on the tach
all the auto's I've drove, the rpms immediately drop |

It's getting to the point where automatics are getting as good as (or better than) sticks in both performance and fuel economy. But for me, nothing beats driving with two feet and two hands. Otherwise I get bored and start to lose the "joy" of driving. Even in bumper-to-bumper traffic, which I face every weekday. I love the idea of having a great auto and flappy paddles, but I think it's a decision I'd regret in year or so. That's just me, though. To each their own, right? |
