Question So just how hard are you driving your 1er?

As the thread title states, I'm wondering what "school of run in" has everyone been taking with their new 1er's?

I've "tried" to stick to the variable speed/load method, keeping under 4,000rpm but have given up to some extent with the tacho often beating me to 4,000 sometimes 5,000 before i get a chance to shift (too busy enjoying the ride).

I'm nearly at 1,000kms now, which isn't much for the 24 days i've had it, but as yet, i've not pushed redline with 6,000 as high as i've taken her, and that was only once.

So my question is, what have the rest of you been doing? (note: try to avoid specific info that may have mr plod knocking on your door!)

Have about 1250km on the clock and been progressively driving her harder. Probably only to 5000rpm max though so far. Been doing the variable speed thing and I feel the shifter action is smoother.

I love this car......

Gas pedal to floor since day 1. I got to drive the hell out of her because I got 6 months of cold Afghanistan weather and no 135 coming up in a few months.

I always make sure the engine oil is up to temp, then floor it as I wish.

Sounds like a good idea but you won't be able to use the cruise control, once you press the DTC the cruise won't work until you switch it back off. (or on)

Good point. I'll just have to 'uncrap' the memory.

Personally, I've worked on the belief that you should
  1. Warm the car up after you start it
  2. After the first tank of fuel (which should be about 500km give or take), drive it the way you're going to drive it for the life of the car.

Done 1950kms so far. Basically was careful until around 1000kms and gradually rev higher till 6000rpm since then.

Avoid driving hard till warm-up.

I feel that I can now floor it without problems- I reckon having to be careful for 2500kms is way over the top- and besides the car is totally addictive to drive.......

But we all know that don't we.

Also, Andrew has just done to CDV mod this week and I now actually have a clutch instead of the useless plate that I had before the mod- thoroughly recommended. Thanks Andrew!

I've varied my driving style, which isn't avoidable given it's my only vehicle and I can't help but crawl to work along with the rest of thr traffic. When the opportunity presents itself, I go hard, but have been trying not to rev over 4500rpm. Last weekend at Black Spur though, who knows what the tacho was doing - my eyes were fixed on every upcoming twist and turn in the road.

Also, since Andrew installed the Sprint Booster, I'm at 4500rpm before I know it!

I sometime barely manage 350km out of my 120i, so I'm expecting the 135i to not last me much more than 250km......

I'm at 3000km and last week I saw the needle swing to near 8000rpm, I had turned off all the traction control nannies and went WOT in 2nd gear, at about 5000rpm I lost traction and before I could lift me foot I could hear the engine changing pitch and the taco had overshot 7 and was heading to 8 before it declined and changed into 3rd. The speedo needle shot up as fast as the taco. I checked the tyres when I got home and they still looked fine. From that extreme to another I got 630km out of a tank with all highway cruising and computer said 30km to empty when I filled up.

Thanks for all the responses. I definitely let mine get up to operating temperature before i even begin to open her up. I must admit though, the top end of the rev range...while it does ensure your licence will be made short work of by mr plod, it sure is intoxicating. God I love this car.:headbang::respekt::thumbup:

What L/100km are you getting Swift? 630km on a tank is almost doubled mine!

It is certainly almost better than I can manage with a 120i on a pure highway cruise with two people in the car and air-con on. Best I've got is 7.2L/100km and that is mainly on cruise control sitting at 102km/h so my right foot had no say in the matter. With the 55 litre tank that would have given me a cruising range of 750km.

That trip averaged 7.8 L/100km but it was nearly all highway 110km/h with cruise on, around the city I average about 12.5.

Went to W/gong from here today first time (second time really but was behind a truck last time both down and up) in some real twistie roads down and then up the Macquarie pass, nothing in front. Wow this car is as nimble as My late STI but (builds up speed) quicker in a straight line and as composed at speed as my late e39 m5. Truly awsem car.
Oh averaged 8.8lt 100kms for the trip which is better than the other two.
