Should there be a turbocharged 4 cylinder 1er coupe in the U.S.???
I ask because of gas prices and also in consideration of the news reports saying BMW plans on using the PSA/BMW developed 4 cylinder currently in use in the MKII MINI Cooper/Clubman in various 1er models. There's a lot of hoop-la around the piss poor attempt of a 4 banger in the 118 and how BMW should NEVER sell a 4 cylinder in the U.S. again, but with the way gas is now and with impending CAFE regulations now may be the appropriate time to reintroduce the BMW 4 cylinder to the American market. 4 cylinders have also been the predominant choice in American car purchases in the last few years.
I think it was said that the 4 cylinder would be turbocharged and produce something around 260 hp? Don't quote me on that but power would be 220+. |

My 1.8T GTi routinely got about 24-25mpg in mixed driving…and that's exactly what my 128i is getting right now.
I don't think the 4-banger will have drastically better fuel economy. That said, I wish BMW would bring the diesels over. The 120 and 123d are very appealing cars, and had the 123d been available here, that's what I would have ordered.

i recall reading on a car blog that BMW will be expanding the use of the 1.6ltr pot found in the MINI Cooper S, and adding it to the BMW lineup
i'll dig around and search for the article |

that's good if diesels performs similar to petro. add the superior fuel economy and you are all set.
however, the ridiculous diesel price in the U.S. makes it a losing cause to drive a diesel.

If they could make a 4cyl (sequential?) twin-turbo version to weigh around 3100 lbs and produce around 250BHP, then my answer is an unqualified yes.
Otherwise, don't bother. (What do we have the 128i here for?)

The only reason we might not see a 4cyl diesel here is because BMW is afraid of diluting their image with any type of 4 cylinders, for some reason. :iono:

No new diesel passenger car can currently be sold in all 50 states. The ones that are sold are 45 state cars and can't be registered in NY, CA, MA, etc. The rest of the country (EPA) is slowly transitioning over to the stricter rules over the next couple of years at which point none of the cars available will be able to be sold in any state unless there are some serious changes (such as Mercedes upcoming BLUETEC technology).

If I remember correctly, BMW will initially start with 2 models: 335d and X5 x35d (or some silly name like that). 50 states legal, using urea add-on. Do a search over at bimmerfest, they have the official BMW announcements...
