The only people that will know the answer to that is BMW USA I would imagine, which I'm sure gives you no comfort.
I have a 120d here in Australia and it is a brilliant engine and the car goes like a rocket. Admittedly it doesn't sound as sexy as a high revving petrol but it can give them a run for their money! I'm hoping that BMW Australia will bring in the twin turbo 123d coupe - I'd trade my E46 for that in a heartbeat! I run my diesel on B100 (100% biodiesel) made from recycled cooking oil (rapeseed) and it hasn't skipped a beat - 12,000km and counting... With the last set of fuel efficiency laws passed here in the States, BMW will have to do something to improve their fleet-wide fuel efficiency.
But not until 2020. So "ever" may come in 2020 when the new regulations come into effect. Things could change if California wins their lawsuit against the EPA. Then "ever" may come in 2015, unless BMW can come up with a non-diesel solution to the California CO2 emissions requirements. Personally, I'm hoping BMW will take the role to LEAD the car industry in highly efficient luxury cars. Instead of dragging their feet and becoming just another follower who waits until the legislation requires them to change with the rest of the pack. The latest news we got about the diesel 1er's was an unofficial post from a knowedgable BMW insider (Scott26) who said the 123d wasn't headed to the States. Since Scott26 has been proven to be pretty reliable, hopes here have sunk depressingly low that we will see the 123d in the near future. I think there would have to be some kind of shake-up at BMW for us to see a 1er diesel here in the States any time soon. I've completely given up hope for a 2009 model, which would have been a long-shot at best in the first place. |

Oooh.... don't say that!
We seem to have almost all other diesels available here with the exception of the 330d so I'm hoping we will see the 123d. After all, it is the same as my 120d's engine but with an additional turbo. Maybe I could retrofit the turbo Paul |

With the 335d and the X5 diesels coming in 2008 (it's already been announced), I'm sure BMW is simply testing the waters in the diesel market.
I think diesel has an uphill battle in the US because people think of dirty tractor trailers when we think of diesel. Granted the new bio diesels are much greener and have great fuel economy, but it's still a perception issue here. If all goes well, and the US adopts the new cars, expect the 1er to be oil burning with it's next iteration of the 1er, in my best opinion, which is likely the 2012 model year. |
