Would you pay $49,500 for an M1
Would you pay $49,500 for an M1 that had 355 N/A bhp, weighed 3,100 lbs., had lightweight forged M rims, lower stance, quad exhaust, even better brakes, CF roof and a more proper "M" aero kit?
I would. That price and performance sounds right. Takes nothing away from the upcoming M3, but still beats out the 135i and is a true N/A "M" car. I really think there is a place for the M1. Yes I know the I-6 TT can be tuned to go well beyond these numbers, but at the end of the day it still isn't an "M" car and MOST people do not modify their cars anyway. I know this has been covered in length, but most of the counter arguments are due to tuning potential of the 135i and that argument doesn't fly for "true" enthusiasts. |

Hell no. The only things I want that the 135i doesn't have are:
1. hydraulic (rather than electric) power steering; 2. regular (non-run-flat) tires; and 3. a mechanical LSD. I would pay up to $1,000 for a good diff. The other items should be optional on the 135i. Nothing in the M catalog excites me very much. I'm weary of super-complicated performance cars. |

Not a chance in hell. I could get a full-loaded M Coupe for that price (the demand has fell on them and dealers are offering fantastic deals) which is still an amazing vehicle.

50 large for a M1 is truly out of control and is not in keeping with the nature of the segment that the 1 series is in. The original M3 went from being the affordable lightweight compact performance coupe (in 2.3L guise) to being a prohibitively expensive vehicle for most (in its current V8 state). 40k would be pushing it for a M1, especially comparing it to the performance of a 135i with the factory M-sport package.

I don't think so. It's tempting, but at my altitute a stock 135i would stay with a 355hp N/A M1.

All the info you have on the M1 is purely subjective at this point.. It is hard to say whether it would be 'worth it' at this point because i haven't driven it...

No I wont , the #1 reason I ever considered getting the 1 series is the TWIN TURBO MOTOR. With a little tuning
Ie: Procede Turbo Back Exhaust Suspension Bits Lighter Wheels and Grippy tires I'am going to be well under $50K. And I bet you I can beat an M1 light to light. As far as weight issue I was considering CF OEM hood and trunk plus If I really needed to i can wisk away a few interior parts, I bet i can get close to 3,100lbs. But I wont need to do that because other N54 equiped cars out there with a few aftermarket parts are dynoeing at more than 355hp and TQ at like 400. So i dont need to strip my interior just to keep up.........I think its the M1 that needs to do that. And as for being a "TRUE enthusiasts" You can watch the rear end of my 135i as I enthusistically smoke you....

I doubt you'll be able to find a E92 M3 for only $60K for some time.

I might consider a M1 with 355hp/LSD/E-DCT/DSG/M suspension/CF bits for 48k if it truely weights 3000lb to 3100lb. I want a brand new I6 instead of the a refreshed e46 m3 engine.
I just don't see that happening though. Not on the E82 platform at least. That and my patience will run out before such car is released. I doubt I will switch to the M1. There are simply more rewarding place to spend my hard earn cash. IMO

only way is if it was 2900-3000lbs and came with the new M3 V8 and was totally no compromise performance. I'd think about it then. But BMW wouldn't make an M3 killer

The thought of a 135i M Sport (or even better a 123d M Sport) really interests me, but a M1 not so much.
The turbo engines with their large amounts or torque available over a wide bandwidth suit my driving style better than the M NA engines that seem to be happier at high revs. The turbo engines give me the option to drive slow or fast without making me feel like I'm missing out, while the M engines say faster and faster. Bottom line: a 135i in the $30Ks is a better value to me than a M1 in the $40Ks. YMMV. |
