standard audio at high volume?

i am usually listening to USB drive or Ipod
when i turn it up very high
sometimes in a song the voulme starts going down
like the amp is trying to stop the signal from distorting and lowering the gain
is this a common thing?
or is there something wrong with my system?
this is the standard audio system without any upgrades
all stock

Haven't experienced that yet and I've got it up pretty loud a few times. You know one thing that irritates me about the OEM audio system is that there is no volume display. Nothing that tells you how far up the volume control range you are. It would be nice to know especially once I get my aftermarket equipment installed to set gains and allow for headroom on low recordings.

Sounds -no pun intended- like it is doing just that, and makes sense in an OEM system. There is just not too much power output in the base OEM amp to cleanly sustain high volume peaks without distortion.

i thought so
but the sound is not distorted when it does that
i wonder if fitting an aftermarket amp would fix that?
i know its easier to do hat with the base sound system

That's what it is supposed to, if that is the design purpose...

no i mean sometimes it does it when the volume is not turned up all the way
say around 70-75%
and it brings the volume down significantly, say around 45-50%
i wonder if that is a function of the amp or the head unit?

You should take it to your dealer for a check up... perhaps there is something wrong with the speed compensation feature which increases or reduces the volume depending on the speed. Perhaps that is malfunctioning and it is no longer doing that based on speed but randomly. That feature is in the OEM amp (there should be a speed signal wire going to the base OEM amp).

You could try first to set your speed volume compensation to the minimum and see if that affects somehow your volume issue.

do you know which wire is the speed sensing one?

i could try setting it to the max and seeing if its the same kind of level compensation

Try that...

The minimum is one segment lit, yes. There is no "off" setting.
