Driving Gloves
So… what about those driving gloves? Do any of you wear them? I’m not talking about regular leather winter gloves that one would wear with an over coat or something similar. I’m talking about those you see track drivers wearing to help with grip and control. You know… the ones made of some super soft Italian leather, or deer skin, with the perforation and open on the back of the hand.
Personally, I can see wearing them when I’m out driving for fun on the curvy, winding, hilly roads at high speeds. I can’t see putting them on while I make a quick run to the market however. Although it will be hard talking my way out of a speeding ticket while wearing driving gloves. What about you guys? Do any of you wear them? Would you wear them if given a pair? When would you wear them and when would you not wear them. Should driving gloves be standard equipment for every driving enthusiast? |

I have driving gloves but I wear them only at track events
If you wear them on the street you will look like a giant toolbox Track Gloves are For Track only purposes unless you have gross sweaty palms 24/7 Try wearing a fire suit while driving around the road...it's kind of different but same idea

It would serve to keep the steering wheel nice and clean. Since mine isn't a daily, I have thought about it. Can't quite get past the 'toolbox factor' though for the street.

open back driving gloves + aviators + BMW = douche
Gloves are good for the track, where open windows and no AC make for sweaty hands. I have Sparcos and Oakleys but full finger mountain bike gloves or Mechanix gloves work great. |

It's sort of like wearing a helmet and driving shoes too. You might as well complete the ensemble...
Would you wear them for daily driving? Oh, I also forgot about the flame retardant suit...

I think that pretty much sums up the attitude towards driving gloves.... unless your older than 60, in which case you're excused as some kind of romantic kook, you'll be ridiculed and probably run off the road.

Even though I think it will look very odd, I think you should just do what feels best for you... Are you thinking about wearing them as a style accessory?? If yes, then the heat down below is well deserved. On the other hand if you are thinking about wearing the gloves while taking your car through some nice cork screws and they feel right to you... I say go for it!!!
Just make sure to take them off once you get back to civilization. Personally I am a big fan of this one: My good buddy... walked in his full Sparco suite (driving boots, gloves, fire retardant fleece, helmet) in to a nice restaurant on the way back from the track.. You should of seen people's faces... they thought that the aliens had landed... Funny! Quote:

The only reason to wear gloves is if they required as part of a fire suit. I could understand it if the wheel was made of wood or knurled steel, so leather gloves to keep you from getting blisters, but the steering wheel is already leather. Wearing "driving gloves" other than as part of a fire suit just screams douche.
