Wintery Mix w/ PS2's
Do you guys think that I can "limp" my M3 home from a road trip (300 miles) on the OEM tires Sunday night or Monday if they call for light wintery mix/snow?

i think your answer is in your sig
what are you planning to do once you limp home? will you get winter tires then? if so why not just get them now and get it over and done with i just picked up a set of used Pirelli snow tires for $400 |

Summer Tires are absolutley terrible in the least bit of snow. The rubber will turn to rock with freezing temps. You would have to travel very slowly in the event of snow.

Too much risk IMO. Somewhat would depends on how much snow, whether the roads are cleared quickly (and to the point where you have dry pavement)... But it only takes one moment where somebody else causes you to have to brake hard, swerve, whatever and with any snow on PS2s... bye bye.

Just be careful. I've driven mine before the snows went on in similar conditions, but we are talking from the local library back to my neighborhood, and with heavily salted roads. If you have an alternate means of transportation for the trip it would be highly recommended to take that instead. How low do the temps typically get in your home area? I ask because you might need snows on the car at some point anyway, unless you are planning to park it for a few months. |

I live down in the Virginia Beach area and we might come across something like that once a year. I guess when I get mine all probably call into work on that day. I would pull the trigger and get a winter set if you come across the situation enough to warrant the buy.

Chains? I don't think it is even legal to drive on most roads with chains on is it? Unless you are saying you have more intimate knowledge of his travels somehow, and he is heading into the mountains or something??

I just came in from running a few errands around town. 6 inches of snow on the ground, packed snow and ice on the roads, no asphalt visible, 3 degrees above zero. No biggie. But I grew up in this kind of weather, so it's just normal. Just took it slow and gave myself plenty of room, and whenever I could do it safely, spent some time sideways. Don't normally drive it in this kind of weather, but she's been in the garage for a couple of weeks and felt like getting out. And no, the PS2's don't have as much traction as snow tires would, but even with snow tires, it's obviously rediculously easy to break traction, so either way, driving is kind of like walking on egg shells. |

3:1 you won't make it. Summer tires will leave you stuck on flat ground and you won't be able to stop to save your LIFE nor the person in front of you.

I think you got your answer--don't try it. I drove my car out into 1" of snow in my driveway to test and almost couldn't get it back in.

Depends in whether you like to gamble with your $70K car and your life. PS2s will be like racing slicks in the snow. They might as well not have tread on them.

Depends on the state. They are required in Oregon under some conditions (or AWD w/ traction tires). Of course, people don't know how to handle snow here, which is what's making this week intersting.

I have driven from Chicago to Indianapolis and back twice in the last two weeks on my PS2s. It was ~15 degrees out both times BUT no snow and roads were dry. I set the cruise to 80 and was very confident in the tires/car on both trips despite knowing the tires were much harder due to the low temp. I wouldn't have done it with any precip on the ground though. In fact, I have to make another trip to Indy next week and my company will be renting me an SUV...

I do not recommend driving in winter with Ps2s . Look Up Continental Extreme Contacts tires if you do not want to change winter and summer tires. I had these on my E46 M3 great all around tire. And yes they got me through 6 inches of snow with no problem!!!! http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....ExtremeContact I will probally put these on my E90 M3 soon.
