Lame Oil change
So… I found out yesterday the dealership ( infinity ) I just got my 17 F 80 from put in Castrol 0-30 the other day.
My question is…. How long should I leave the stuff in here before I put some decent oil in there? Or don’t sweat it run it for 5k er so? |

Do you know what Castrol 0W30 they used? If not I would get an oil change asap.

If you don't beat on it at the track or something, it'll be fine for 5k. 0W30 is even allowed per BMW instructions.
But an oil change is cheap enough to do it again and put in whatever you like.

If you don't drive hard. I'd say just use it for 3-4k miles. And then get whatever you'd like done then.

0w30 is the "fuel efficient" FE spec they would recommend. So its not that bad. 3-4k miles OK as long as you have no track days planned.

Actually I Have what you might consider a track day planned for next month…. It Sort of a introductory / school all day class intro to performance racing at a local track here ( Pacific raceways)
Pretty sure I’ll get to run the car fairly hard that day with a instructor in the car. I’ll probably have less than 1000 miles on the car by the time that day comes so I guess I’ll throw some Motule or whatever in it when I get close to the track school thing. |

What's wrong with Castrol Edge 0W-30? It meets BMW LL01 requirement and it's a 30 viscoity at normal operating temperature. Like what would you put in instead, 5W-30 instead 0W-30? At normal operating them, they both would have the same viscosity, the main difference would be in winter conditions. Since you're in Seattle, it does snow occasionally so 0W-30 would be beneficial for you to run.
Tracking your car would decrease your mileage interval since you'll be beating the oil harder, regardless if it's 5W-30 or 0W-30 or if it's Castrol or Motul.

fair question, although I thought castrol lost its LL01 status ? so figured it was a potential crime around here to use it in a s55.
ill sleep ok either way but figured it was worth mentioning. |

I use redline 5W30, but I wouldn't frown at the castrol for normal use, even for an 'intro to track' day

It seems a smidge too thin regarding shear strength / protection for me. And was not the original spec until emissions goals were tweaked. I am sticking with Castrol Edge 0w40, for at least my next oil change. See the various, and most recent mega oil thread in the tech sections. New formula just came out, old stock might be preferred. something something etc etc. there is a lot to read. |

If your doing the first day intro to high performance driving. The first half of the day is just getting to know your car (hard acceleration, hard braking, smooth throttle, obstacle avoidance, etc...) So you'll be idling quite a bit between runs. The second part of the day is track driving and depending on the instructor is how fast you'll get to drive. I cant remember who I got but I remember him asking me to keep it under 120 on the short straight.

Yup that’s what Iam doing. Iam looking to get involved in track days since I don’t drag race anymore. 120 mph seems like a good / fun number for a first day. Is the short straight the dragstrip return road or do they run on the drag strip it self? |

If it's LL-01 you'll be fine (looks like it is from the link below). If you want to track more as a hobby then it makes sense to look into a oil with better wear protection - I use Motul Xcess G2 5w-40 which is also LL01 approved. If it's 10+ days a year then probably a high ester oil (motul sport or 300v even) with frequent OCI makes sense.
