Horrible rattle fixed

I have had a very annoying "rattle" noise which occurred when I hit a sharp edged road rut or a pothole or just some rough pavement. Seemed to be coming from the back. Sounded like a loud sharp "clank". I think I have solved the problem now, which means I love my car again. 2012 135 6MT.
It seems to be the gas filler door! I replicated the noise by banging my fist against the rear fender in the vicinity of the filler door. So far - to confirm that the noise is gone, I jammed a small sponge in between the filer cap and the door, and make sure the door is locked by using the lock in the center of the dash. Maybe somebody else has experienced this too?

That’s weird, could you feel any play in the closed door?
