Who has DIY'd a rear axle?

I'm trying to figure out the best way to take the axle shaft out, in ISTA they have a special tool that is almost $400... no thanks. I've seen some say crow bar, but curious if anyone has found a different wrench or tool that fits and works? Or if you used a crow bar, what was the process?

Here is the damage to the axle and the wheel hub from the compression bolt coming loose.

So if you're just wanting to remove the shaft from the diff, all you need to do is insert a crowbar between the shaft and diff and push the shaft out, being careful not to damage the seal.

You might need to locate the bar first and give it a bat with a hammer, so that its pushing the same way you would but with shock behind it.

Thank you. What are the chances of damaging the seal? Is it easy to avoid damaging it?

Very easy to avoid damaging it. You don't need a huge prybar, ensure that you position the bar with the tip of it against the shaft, that way you're using the diff as the fulcrum. You'll be fine if you don't go ramming it in there like a caveman.
