F85/F86 Operating oil temperature

Guys, please share what’s your NORMAL driving condition oil temperature?
Mine always sits after the first dot in the oil temperature gauge.
After about one hour drive, I opened the hood and I did smell coolant from drive side of the engine bay(where coolant tank sits) is this a sign of coolant leaking? My F86 currently has 54k km.

That's about where my oil temp settles in. The caveats are that mine's an F15 and the gauge is calibrated in Fahrenheit since it's a US car. I would expect it's equivalent, though.

I wouldn't be alarmed at getting a whiff of coolant when the engine's warm. The reservoir is the open part of the system where it "breathes," and when the engine's warm it'll push some coolant out of the engine and into the reservoir, resulting in some fumes being pushed out as coolant displaces air. Just check it several times when the car's totally cold, preferably at about the same ambient temp. If the level isn't going down, you're good.

Mine sits right on the dot during normal highway driving. And hits right where yours is if I push the car hard for a bit.

Any consistent odor of coolant is a slight concern. If it's not consistent than u should be fine. Seals and gaskets don't last forever. I had a F86 which needed oil pan gasket at 65k miles. It was a huge job (13 hours on the book). Keep an eye on your coolant levels. Good luck

I agree.
I don't smell any coolant or oil after driving.

Maybe some spilled after checking or topping off.

I'm at about 23,000 miles on my F86 with a bm3 stage 1 tune. In Hawaii weather and traffic (which is horrible) mine sits just barely past the first dot. Never smell coolant. I'd be looking for an issue with that. You shouldn't smell coolant.

So how often do you top up your coolant?

I have never had the need. Not sure if dealer has when in for service. No odor ever.

Techinally the dot is 95 C degree and the thermostat we have in the water/coolant pump is 105C degree . But because the water pump flap and thermostat works individually in our F85/86s If the vehicle in Sport Plus mode DME aims engine temperature to stay in 95C instead of waiting thermostat to open in 105.

So pushing the car in Normal mode vs Sport Plus mode makes differences in oil temperature.

In mine, if i drive normal in any mode, it stays in 95 C solid and sometimes also goes down to 93C.

If i drive hard with Sport Plus Mode then it goes in between 95 C to 120C. which is about 105C-107C which is completely normal. Operation Temperature on our vehicle is 110-115C.

Coolant should never need to be topped off. If the level is lower than spec (indicated on the reservoir), then there's a leak somewhere or air in the system (after work has been done on the cooling system). If you’re noticing that you have to keep refilling the coolant, it’s important to have the cooling system inspected to figure out why the coolant loss keeps occurring. Low coolant could lead to overheating and eventual catastrophic engine damage.
