What do the sway bars reference?

Do the active sway bars reference the position of the shocks to know when and how much to force to apply, or is it something else?
I see the height adjustment rods, which "could" be sending a signal to control the sway bar in the back, but I don't see anything in the front that would tell the sway bar what to do.
The reason I ask is because I have the KY suspension with simulators. I'm wondering if the sway bars are now static because they are not getting a varying signal from the suspension.
Does anyone have a definitive answer to this?
