Worth using non OEM Air Filter?

Greetings,

Sorry for likely dumb question, but is there any point in using non-OEM air filter for the S65?

Are there any: confused2 performance improvements whatsoever in using aftermarket air filters?

If there performance gains albeit small, what do people recommend for brands to look into?

Thanks,
Merlin

I use the Macht Schnell drop in with stock elbow.. Small performance benefits from using an aftermarket filter... a tad more if it's replacing a 2008/2009 filter from what I was told bc those MY are more restrictive. I plan on replacing mine every 8-10K miles just to keep it fresh since it is less filtration.. I get mine from IND. Nothing negative from my experience and can tell a small improvement in throttle response and probably it would dyno 5-8 HP better, just from what I've researched.

EDIT: Forgot to add... I definitely saw an increase in MPG of about 1-2 mpg

While the element itself can provide minor increases in performance. The biggest contributing factor is the elbow itself for performance gains. However, sticking to just the filter element, a nice benefit is going to one that you can simply clean when needed versus paper disposable. In the long run this can be a cost savings with little difference in filtration for most drivers. Another benefit is that some filter mediums are less restrictive and also provide better fuel economy. My experience going to a performance intake with elbow replacement has been approx 1.5-2.5 MPG's. YMMV

Known brands are probably your best bet for recommendations: Macht Schnell, AfE Power, Turner, Dinan, and others.

I put the AA Green filter in my 08 a few weeks back. The induction noise is definitely more audible now. I've also noticed a very very slight bump in power, but honestly what I like most is the added noise.

Swapping the filter is will provide marginal gains over stock. A full intake system like the Macht Schnell Stage 2 intake will provide a filter and eliminates a really nasty restriction coming from the airbox - increasing airflow (and power).

For example, here's a comparison of the intake charge pipe (left) vs Macht Schnell (right). The OEM filter mounting flange (not pictured) also has this restriction, a replacement is provided with the Macht Schnell intake:

The MS piece also does not have the "accordion" type bend as seen on the stock charge pipe. A less restrictive flange, larger charge pipe and high-flow filter (along with ICS scoops) all work together as a package, resulting in best hp gains - which is why the entire system is included as a kit.

Hope this helps.
