Oil Change Questions

I am about to replace my oil pan gasket and I'll do an oil change as well.

Where would you suggest I buy my oil/oil filter?

Thanks!

And I need 5w30? correct?

Your local bmw dealership will have the correct oil and filter or you can try any Walmart or auto parts store for an LL01 rated oil.

Or you could always order it online.

I can't go to dealership, as I am replacing the oil pan gasket/bolts as well.

So it should be LL01 5W30?

Based on my research it should be anything from 0w-30, 5w-30, 0w-40 and 5w-40. Im going to try 5w-40 my next oil change because thats what Pennzoil website suggests. 0w-30 and 5w-30 are recommended because of emissions reasons from my understanding. But i dont really care about emissions and would rather keep my engine running well

I just changed my own oil yesterday in my 2019 M2 with S55 engine (same as M4/M3).

Get the 5w-40 Pennzoil Euro Platinum it is BMW LL01 approved and it is better than what BMW sells at the dealer. You need 7 quarts.

Don't understand your reasoning for not being able to purchase oil at the dealership but nonetheless there are other options.

LL01 is a specification which you can find several grades of oil ranging from 0w30 to 5w40. Just look on the back of the bottle for the oem specifications to make sure either LL01 or LL01FE is listed.

If you don't want to order oem oil online I recommend Castrol 0w40 which can be found at both Walmart or amazon for around $27 for a 5qt jug and it's LL01 approved.

For oil filter I would stick with oem. Just order one online if you can't go to the dealership.

I guess this is officially already another oil thread. Who am I to stop it. +1 Castrol 0w40 LL01 is what I ended up using for a recent oil change. I would avoid the LL-01 FE variants as they are thinner/will deliver slightly more fuel efficiency at the expense of slightly reduced engine protection.

Bimmerworld seems to think you can/should go to 10w40. I'm leaning toward Redline 0w40.

I wouldn't bother with redline. Neither their 10w40 nor 0w40 are LL01 if that is important to you. It's expensive and no better than regular "over the counter" oils like Castrol, pennzoil, etc

Redline says they are... On both the 10w40 and 0w40 pages on the OEM Compatibility tab they say they're suitable for BMW LL-01.

"Suitable for" is not the same as approved. It's a deceptive marketing tactic they take. I do believe though they do have an LL01 approved 5w40.

It's a hotly debated subject. I'd never use Redline on BMW's change interval, but if you keep it fresh it's good. I've always used it in my high boost turbo engines and had good luck. Probably just habit more than merit at this point. It's not that much more expensive bought in bulk. Around $11/qt. Even see it at $38/gallon sometimes.

I don't think there is anything wrong with red line oil, just don't think there is anything gained by using it over other oils. I would still say $11/qt is expensive considering you can get a 5qt jug of Castrol or M1 0w40 for around $25 from Walmart/Amazon.

Here on the Space Coast in Florida I found 5 qt jugs of Castrol 0W40 at Walmart for $22.00! I bought 2. One for my N55 and one for the S55's next oil change.
Lowest I've ever seen it.

Here is the link to MANN filters specification:

https://catalog.mann-filter.com/EU/e...00000000149024)

They are the same:
11 42 7 854 445 - Original BMW Number
HU 8011Z - MANN

For Air Filters BMW use MAHLE filters:

13 72 7 843 283 - Original BMW Number
LX 2075 - MAHLE/KNECHT

13 72 7 843 284
LX 2074 - MAHLE/KNECHT

I'm about to change my oil as well. Got 5W-30 Castrol full synthetic. I read that's the correct oil but after reading this thread it seems like most are going with 0W-40. Is 5W-30 correct or should I get 0W-40?

Re-read the thread. It's not about 5w30 or 0w40. It's about having the proper spec which is LL01 or LL01FE. There are numerous viscosities which carry these certifications. The 5w30 you have probably does not carry the approval that BMW requires because I don't think Castrol makes an LL01 5w30 any longer.

No. You're 100% correct it doesn't. Glad I read the thread

I'm an old school.
If both options, 0W30 vs 0W40, meet LL01, I'd go with 0W40 for better protection, though may see superficial MPG drop.
