iPod Classic not working on X5M (F85)

My apologies if this has been discussed before but here it goes. I’m trying to connect my iPod Classic on my 2016 BMW X5M using the same Y Aux cord i used on my 2010 X5M. However my sound system is not recognizing the device and i’m getting the following error message - “Aux device is not connected or transfer of track information is not supported by the Aux device”. If i manually press play on the iPod, i’m able to hear music & change songs but i have no functionality using my car’s interface. Any workaround to this issue or am i doing something wrong.

Same happened with us. My wife had an 09 and then got a 14 M Sport. She had to use an Ipod Touch with a regular lightning cable. The Ipod Nano works as well.
I have a 16 X5 M and both the Nano and touch work fine with the lightning cable.

funny thing is that my teen knows more abt cars than I. She said dad, just use the iPod charging cable that came with that ancient device. The same goes for the iPhone, just use the charging cable and plug it in. I did that and voila.....
