Opinion on Airbags and Child

I have a 7 year old that is approx 44" tall and 40lbs. I know what is recommended, but I think he would be safer in the front seat of my 04 Z4 as long as the seat is all of the way back with the airbags on instead of off. He is still in a booster, I even question that. I just got the car and he has not ridden in it yet. Any experience with this would be appreciated.

Tough call.. its like booster seats in single cab pick up trucks...
